  • Wireless Networking Question(s)

    Here's my current setup:

--DLink 802.11b wireless router w/ 4 port switch.
-- Laptop w/ DLINK 802.11b wireless PCMCIA card
    -- 2 wired desktops.

Using the laptop and the wireless connection, when I try to download anything large, say, >5MB, when I'm trying to download I lose my wireless connection.

Then, I have to unplug the router, take out the PCMCIA, then reinsert everything, it syncs up and its fine.

But, I still can't download wirelessly anything over ~5mb.

I should note that the PCMCIA card and router did not ship w/ XP drivers, I had to download them from DLINK.

Now, here's what I want to do:

I now want to move one of my wired desktops to another room and make it a wireless desktop and keep my wireless notebook too.

However, I need to be able to use the wireless desktop just as I used the wired one: I need to be able to download large files, namely large torrents.

Is it going to give me the same problem? Any ideas what the problem is now?

Do you think upgrading to an 802.11g router and NICs is going to solve my problem?

Finally, how much difference is there between the .11g and the SUPER G and xtreme G from DLINK and Linksys? Is it worth the extra money?

    Thanks, everyone, for your help!

When is the last time you checked their site for updated drivers? Also, Dlink is pretty good about swapping out bad equipment - it might be worth a call to see if they'll get you a new card....

you might be gettin the dropped connections on the router side.

Check to see if your router has any firmware updates available.

Are the files that are larger than 5 MB porn related? If so, god might be punishing you.

How good is the signal strength? Have you updated the router's firmware? Did you call FedEx? Why are you downloading so much pron?

I just bought the DLink Extreme G router and it's awesome.

              winston smith -

              sounds like a firmware problem.

I read that someone said they called Dlink about this issue and found out their access point was fried due to the firmware issue.

What u can do is upgrade firmware and see if it helps your problem.

However my suggestion is to buy the DI-624+ as it is a great product. I have it and I have no problems. I am not too crazy about Linksys as I noticed it is quite buggy with videoconferencing and Xbox (two applications that require enormous bandwidth).

Dlink handles videoconferencing and xbox like a dream.
