  • Astros get bullpen help from A's

Not sure if I saw this posted here.

Harville and Justin Duscherer were out of options for the A's and they had to demote 1 for Rich Harden's return ...

Harville is 27 - was a AAA closer last year but struggled when he was brought up.

A's deal Harville to Astros for right-handed pitcher

    By Chris Haft

    Mercury News

ANAHEIM - Maintaining their supply of pitchers, the A's traded Chad Harville to Houston on Friday for right-hander Kirk Saarloos, once considered among the Astros' top prospects.

The A's made it clear while designating Harville for assignment on Thursday that they would try to trade him to a team that would give him an opportunity to pitch -- and, of course, attempt to obtain a potentially useful player in return. At first glance, this move may have accomplished both objectives.

Harville could bolster Houston's bullpen, which was thinned by the loss of closer Billy Wagner to free agency.

Saarloos, who will join Oakland's Triple-A Sacramento affiliate as a starter, has excelled in the minors, posting an 18-4 record with a 2.45 ERA in 54 appearances -- along with 42 walks and 181 strikeouts in 198 1/3 innings.

``His minor league numbers speak for themselves,'' said A's assistant general manager David Forst, who said that Oakland's brain trust had coveted Saarloos since his collegiate days at Cal State-Fullerton.

Glad they kept Duchsherer...he could be a top-3 starter for the A's in a few years (once one of the "Big 3" are gone)...

Yeah - he put up some amazing #s in the minors, never throws a ball, but he couldn't break glass with his fast ball. He pitched well the other night vs. TEX - basically that kept him on the team!

Could be good for the Cardinals. I thought Saarloos was a decent pitcher.
