Anyone else scared to think what this device could potentially do to our society?

It depends upon how evil the people using it are. For children at risk for being taken by strangers or someone they know it might be a good thing.

As long as they're not mandatory, who cares?
And, frankly, it has never occured to me that "winning" a debate is important, or that I should be hurt when someone like Airshark or kah, among others (for whom winning a pseudo debate or declaring intellectual superiority over invisible others is obviously very important) ridicule me.

I'm going to invest in some scalpels, needles and fishing-line...think of the $$$ you can make on the side removing these fuckers...I've got a folding table out in the garage that would work real nice...
. . . and to tell you this: I work with gays, have friends who are gay, go to church with gays. Most of them are aware that I believe that homosexual behavior is sin. Some of them actually agree. Most don't. It's OK . . . because they also know or at least have been made aware of my multitude of sins: adulterous heart, lustful and covetous behavior, wicked pride, angry spirit . . . do I need to go on?

Is that where you're keeping the kidney stones?

Yeah...I'm doing my own shockwave kidney surgery in the garage with a modified defibrilator I scored from my perimedic ex-brother-in-law...

I'm also piecing together bendy straws and one of those claw-grabber-thingies, and I'm going to offer discount arthroscopic surgeries...

              Next project: belt-sander cornea reshaping...

Anyone ever seen "Minority Report"? It's a Spielberg movie that's set in 2054 and in it, everyone has a chip identifier so the government knows your whereabouts ALL THE TIME. It's a crazy movie, but I wouldn't be surprised if this shit starts happening soon.

                  Amen to that!

If someone opts to have this done, hey, that's a choice they'll have to live with.

                  I choose not to.

I think the government may start doing this to people when they're born. Not just to people who want it done to them. Think about it. The government would know everything about you and where you are at all times. This is exactly what they want.
