  • GAME FIVE - BLUES @ SAN JOSE 4/15 9:00 p.m. CDT

GAME: St. Louis Blues at San Jose Sharks.

PLAYOFF SERIES: Western Conference quarterfinals; Sharks lead 3-1.

    TIME: Thursday, 9 p.m. CDT.

A 3-1 series lead is far from safe in the NHL playoffs.

The St. Louis Blues know it, but their circumstances remain daunting as they try to stave off elimination in Game 5 against a confident San Jose Sharks team.

St. Louis, coming off a 4-3 loss in Game 4 on Tuesday, has seen firsthand what it takes to overcome that deficit.

The Blues blew a 3-1 lead in the first round against the Vancouver Canucks last spring. St. Louis, though, has rallied from a 3-1 deficit only twice in 12 tries - the last time in 1999.

Plus, the Blues are facing a team that is receiving contributions from every forward line.

After a strong performance in San Jose's 4-1 loss in Game 3 on Monday, Alexander Korolyuk helped the Sharks bounce back and regain control of the series. Korolyuk, who scored 19 goals during the regular season, got his first two goals of the postseason in Tuesday's victory.

Among Korolyuk's Game 3 contributions was a first-period hip check that knocked Blues forward Ryan Johnson out of that contest, as well as Game 4. Korolyuk moved up to the first line toward the end of Game 3.

"It's just kind of a message to the rest of the team that if you do the little things well and play like a warrior, you'll end up on top," Sharks coach Ron Wilson said.

Unsung Scott Thornton also got his first two goals of the playoffs for San Jose, the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference.

Thornton had only six goals, a career high, and 21 points during the regular season. He had never scored in 22 career postseason games before beating Osgood in the first and second periods.

Sharks center Alyn McCauley missed his third straight game Tuesday with an apparent shoulder injury. His status for Thursday is uncertain.

After losing the first two games, the Blues outshot the Sharks 25-8 in the first two periods en route to a 4-1 victory in Game 3. The Sharks, though, regained control of the series in the second period Tuesday, spending most of the 20 minutes in the Blues' end and outshooting them 12-5 while scoring twice to break a 1-1 tie.

"It was a frustrating period," Blues forward Doug Weight said. "It was there to be won. A couple of lapses and we paid for them."

The Blues scored twice in the third period, but couldn't overcome a pair of two-goal deficits.

Ineffectiveness on the power play helped put St. Louis in a hole. The Sharks' penalty killers made it difficult for the Blues to set up with the man advantage, running their streak to 18 straight kills before Doug Weight's scored with 4:53 left. That cut San Jose's lead to 4-3.

"Our special teams have done the job all year and we have to continue to do it," Sharks center Mike Ricci said. "Our power play was huge tonight and the PKs were pretty tough also."

Mike Danton and Pavol Demitra also scored for the Blues. Demitra's goal was his first of the series, and Danton scored for the first time since Feb. 10 to end a 17-game drought.

HOW THEY GOT HERE: Blues - 91 points; 7th seed. Sharks - 104 points; 2nd seed.

PLAYOFF TEAM LEADERS: Blues - Mike Sillinger, 3 goals and 4 points; Keith Tkachuk, Christian Backman and Petr Cajanek, 2 assists; Chris Pronger, 16 PIM. Sharks - Patrick Marleau, 3 goals; Vincent Damphousse, 3 assists; four with 3 points; four with 6 PIM.

PLAYOFF SPECIAL TEAMS: Blues - Power play: 5.3 percent (1 for 19). Penalty killing: 88.9 percent (24 for 27). Sharks - Power play: 11.1 percent (3 for 27). Penalty killing: 94.7 percent (18 for 19).

GOALTENDERS: Blues - Chris Osgood (1-3, 2.36 GAA); Reinhard Davis (0-0, 0.00). Sharks - Evgeni Nabokov (3-1, 1, 1.69); Vesa Toskala (no appearances).

Very telling stat flashed at the last game: Blues were 0 for the last 36 going into game 3 on the power play.

You can't win games unless your special teams are clicking.

Blues drop the ball on this one and lose. Good Riddance, I say...

I'm afraid that, even though"there is no trend", we will *NOT* be able to pull this one off. We're coming home losers tonight. Nothing has really changed in the Blues camp, and what little effect Kitchens has made, isn't nearly enough.

And I'm with SteveI - good riddance. Even if we *somehow* made it past the Sharks, we'd be gone in the second round.

I *still* say we didn't deserve to make the playoffs in the first place.

Is that why we haven't won that newfangled cuppy thing yet?

Goaltending has been the team's weak link for more years than I care to even think about. This year, the power play will prove fatal.

I really don't think, outside of game 2, that goaltending has been the team's problem this year.

It's the special teams... specifically, the Power Play. We couldn't buy goals at even strength during the season and now that's all we're getting... it's odd....

Blues stars must find their way in San Jose
                          By Derrick Goold
                          Published: Wednesday, Apr. 14 2004

SAN JOSE, Calif. - After their season-threatening loss in Game 4 on Tuesday,
Blues goaltender Chris Osgood was leaving the dressing room when he crossed
                          paths with winger Keith Tkachuk.

                          As they passed, Tkachuk said:

                          "Gotta force Game 6, Oz."

The Blues visit San Jose tonight with their season - and, for some, their
future as Blues - at stake. The Sharks hold a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven,
first-round series and can end the Blues' 25th consecutive postseason with a
win in Game 5 at HP Pavilion. As Tkachuk told Osgood, the Blues have to force a
                          Game 6 to stay alive.

And if they're going to do that, it has to start with those two and the Blues'
                          other should-be stars.

A hockey axiom repeated by Blues' players and coaches states: In the postseason
a team's best players must be its best players. Surprise pitch-ins are supposed
to complement the team's standouts. But it's the big names, the stars, that
shine the way to victory in spite of devoted defensive attention.

The Blues have this backward this time of year.

Tkachuk, the Blues' top offensive threat, has been unable to best the
opponent's staunchest defenders and has failed to score in his past 10
postseason games. His most recent postseason goal was in Game 1 of last
spring's first round. Though he has had fluctuations of superb and even
striking play, Osgood has a .865 save percentage in his past seven playoff
games with the Blues, six of which were losses, and he has failed to steal a
                          win.

Pavol Demitra, who hadn't had a point in the 10 previous playoff
games, scored his first goal of this series Tuesday. Chris Pronger was in the
penalty box or just steps out of the box for two of San Jose's goals Tuesday.
Doug Weight has toted the team with two goals this series and eight points in
the Blues' past seven playoff games.

The Blues' three highest-paid forwards have three goals and two assists.
Newcomer Mike Sillinger, a journeyman, has three goals and one assist.

"We have no choice but to rebound," Osgood said. "Now it's do or die every
game, but we're due to win a game in San Jose. Every game has been close. We
                          don't feel we're being outplayed."

At even strength, this has been a relatively even series, with the exception of
the second period Tuesday. Both teams have five even-strength goals. (Two of
the Sharks' leading scorers, Patrick Marleau and Vincent Damphousse, are a
                          combined minus 6.)

The Blues started turning the puck over Tuesday on their approach into the
Sharks' zone. That gave San Jose the speed going the other direction - and the
                          scoring chances.

The deciding goals came as a result of the Sharks' power play.

Alexander Korolyuk scored two seconds after Pronger stepped out of the penalty
box. On Pronger's second penalty of the game - midway through the third and
shortly after the Blues had sliced the Sharks' lead to one goal - Korolyuk
                          scored his second goal.

"I don't see why we can't (go into San Jose and win)," said Pronger, who has 16
penalty minutes in the series. "It seems like it all comes down to staying out
of the box and playing five on five. This has been a special-teams series.
We're getting down on the power play but not getting production. They got the
big goals on their power play."

Starting with power play - one for 19 through four games of the series - the
Blues' stars have to spark the Blues to buck the odds. Before the start of the
season, general manager Larry Pleau held meetings with Pronger, Demitra, Weight
and Tkachuk. The one-on-one talks were pointed. The message: The team goes as
they go. Since that foursome has been together starting in the 2002 postseason,
the Blues have gone no further than the second round. Add Osgood to the mix
because of his role - and his statement last spring that if he stole a game vs.
Vancouver the Blues win that series instead of blowing a 3-1 lead - and there's
an un-fab five who the Blues need to lead them.

Or it probably will be their last spring together.

"We have to play a perfect game," Tkachuk said of the entire team.

It doesn't have to be perfect. Productive might be enough.

Twice before in franchise history, the Blues have rallied from a 3-1 deficit to
win in seven games. In 1991, the Blues did it against Detroit with two of the
games at home. In 1999, the Blues did it against Tkachuk and the Phoenix
Coyotes with two of the three wins, including the Game 7 overtime victory, at
                          Phoenix.

"All you can do is worry about the next game," winger Scott Mellanby said.
"Momentum is a big thing in a series like this. You get it in the next game and
                          where it takes you."
If the guys think they hafta play perfect to win and overcome the karma I pointed out, than they are screwed....
