Where was the scrutiny for McGwire?

I am so tired of this. Why doesn't he just come out and say it? I just saw him on ESPN News talking about this column and the host (?) pinned him down and finally got him to say what he always says. The reason why people are all over Bonds and were not on Mac is because of race. He said so in the interview but doesn't come right out and say it in this column. It's implied but never stated. Also, he stated that there is so much more uproar over steroids and Bonds than there ever was about McGwire and andro. The host did an internet search about the 2 issues and actually found more articles about McGwire and andro than he did about Bonds and steroids. Facts didn't change Smith's opinion, however. It's easy to forget what happened over 4 years ago. I remember every news/sports outlet was all over McGwire about this. Smith stated it was because McGwire had a much better relationship with the media that Bonds has. Maybe if Bonds hadn't alienated so many people in the media over the years, maybe they would cut him some slack until all the facts are known.

Was it right that McGwire was taking a supplement to possibly enhance his performance? Probably not. Was it legal in MLB? Yes. It's irrelevent that the NFL and other sports governing bodies had declared andro illegal. It was legal in MLB. McGwire did nothing wrong.

In the interview he also stated that more people were rooting for McGwire than Sosa in 99 because of race. I'm not so nieve that I completely discount this. I believe there probably is some truth to that, but to turn every issue in sports into something related to race which is what Smith often does is what makes me tune him out.

Man fuck that racist ass muthafucker. Being black in America you can get away with saying whatever the hell you want when it comes to race. I believe it was wrong what Limbaugh said, but when Smith implies the same thing, no one comes out against him. No one wants to be labeled a racist. Smith is a little punk bitch, talks big, but basically hes a racist.

      I've said it all along.

Smith is angry, arrogant and driven by a racial agenda.
His mind is not for rent, to any god or government.

At the time, Andro was not illegal in the United States (and still might not be illegal). Steroids are very much illegal.

I will say this as a huge fan of McGwire and not a fan of Bonds (although I really respect his talent).

Bonds gets a lot more heat regarding his homeruns than McGwire did. I've never heard anyone say their should be an asterick next to McGwires homers. I hear it all the time in regards to Bonds. Much of this is Bonds own doing in being such a surley dude and not getting the benefit of the doubt in the media.

I'm also realistic enough to KNOW that people rooted for McGwire over Sosa because of race. I had people tell me as much.

"I will say this as a huge fan of McGwire and not a fan of Bonds (although I really respect his talent)."

He is the best player that I have ever seen play the game of baseball.

There is a huge difefrence between McGwire and Bonds:

            McGwire was always huge.

When Bonds entered the game of baseball, he weighed 175 pounds.

So, over the course of his career, he put on 50 pounds of pure muscle. It just doesn't happen-regardless of how much a person lifts weights.

Plus, his cap sixe has grown a few inches too.

I'll grant you that -- Instant Karma.

But also, there's the fact that his personal trainer -- who was in the clubhouse every game day, and whom Bonds gave a diamond-encrusted ring shaped '73' -- is the target of a federal investigation of the manufacture and distribution of steroids -- a Schedule III narcotic, not legal, even if baseball didn't test for it. Remember, andro wasn't illegal when McGwire used it.

Or the fact that Bonds has added bulk and increased his production and power during a time when ballplayers are historically in decline.

Bonds is suspected because he is suspicious, as are McGwire and Sosa (a 140 lbs. slap-hitter when he came up).

We just know more now about how rampant steroid use is in MLB.

He was still a great player before he got big. Afterall, steroids doesn't help him hit the ball. What about all the football players that gain 30-40 pounds. I'm not saying Bonds didn't do steiroids. In his defense, he doesn't have the injuries supposedly associated with steriod users.

I'm so shocked that he would write this =]
When you say to your neighbor, "We're having a loud party on Saturday night if that's alright with you," what you really mean is, "We're having a loud party on Saturday night."

Stephen Smith is actually pretty well known. Known more than most sporswriters around the country. He's an analyst for espn for the NBA. He's writes for the Philadelphia newspaper.
