    C Schilling 116 pitches.
    8 IP, 4 ER, 6 HA, 10 K, 0 BB, 0.750 WHIP

He's trailing to the Jays 4-2 heading into the bottom of the 8th. Francona sent him out for the top of the 8th to keep him in line for a W, I suppose. He had already thrown over 100.

    He had a 1-2-3 8th, btw.

Before baseball entered this current age of specialization, (middle relief, setup men, and closer) it was the norm for starters to get at least eight innings.

Sorry, this is in reference to those that complained about Morris throwing 93 pitches last night.

        dvy,

        I agree.

I'm pretty "old school" when it comes to my starters. I feel that I'm paying them for quality starts. IMO, they should go at least seven. I perfer eight on most occasions. And, I'd like to see more complete games.

          Kev,

I agree. The complete game has gone out the window.

I often wonder if these guys can't go the distance because it's not forced upon them anymore.

In this age of conditioning...CG's should be going up...not down...what has happened to the bulldogs?

Pitchers are conditioned to throw 100-110 pitches now. It would take a complete change in the way pitchers are conditioned in order for their to be a lot of eight inning outings and complete games again.

Not just the physical conditioning, but also the mental. The mindset today seems to be, "I've pitched my six, it's someone else's turn." Also used to be a four-man rotation (weren't the 69 Mets the first to use a five-man?)

Does anyone know: did athletes used to drop dead onfield occasionally in the days before air conditioning was so prevalent?

Thanks Dog. I'm thinking at this point most of these guys have been raised with AC. Especially the college guys. They live, study and drive in air conditioned comfort .. the only time they're not in AC is when they're on the field. Except for those from third world countries. No Dusty Baker jokes please.

Schilling is one of the few guys today that can hold up to that kind of work.
