  • Anyone got a spare VW clutch laying around?

I dropped my car off at the shop today. I got a call back a little before 5:00 -- I need a new clutch in my Jetta.

    The price?

$700.00 in parts, plus about 3 hours of labor (minimum) because Volkswagen is gay. Not gay as in "happy," but gay as in "40 year old who read all the Harry Potter books in a row."

    * Payment processing. It will be official soon.

What'd you do, go to Huegy's mechanic?

Clutches for Jettas are around $300. 3 Hours of labour though sounds about right.

Look, just because you're having problems with your car doesn't give you the right to take cheap shots at Turd Ferguson.

                  What year was her GTI?

                  1) I have a 1997 Jetta, which, apparently, is the absolute worst year for Volkswagens.

                  2) Harry Potter is just gay, dude.

                      I bet Hugey's mechanic doesn't give a 'happy ending.'

I took my Jetta to the same people who have done work on the family cars for decades. They know their shit and wouldn't dream of jobbin' us -- we give them so much business as it is. Plus we refer a lot of our friends to them, so it isn't in their best interest to try and job us.

                            Sorry to hear that, Steve.

I had a 1995 Ford Escort up until about 2001, when I ran it off the road and got a bill for $2,000.

At some point, you have to consider the risk/benefit equation on continuing to repair a 1997 vehicle.

Trust me, I've already thought about all of that.

The car is 100% paid for, so I've got that going for me. I just want to get it fixed up to the point where I can sell it outright and cover my taxes, licensing and other fees that are associated with a new car purchase. I just hope a 1997 Volkswagen Jetta with 160,xxx miles on it can fetch some dough.

I've started the research process and the Mazda 3 is the early front-runner. I'm looking to move in on it after the new year.
