  • The Sumerians Loved their Beer

We went to the Art Museum today to see the Treasures of the Tombs of Ur display. Very interesting display. One thing in particular caught my attention. Seems that barley was a plentiful crop in that area of Mesopotamia. Once they discovered that barley was not good for making bread, they apparently figured out how to make beer. Turns out beer was a very popular beverage in the region. They even had a goddess of beer, Ninkasi. Archaelogists also found a song written to the beer god Ninkasi which said that beer was the drink that "made your liver happy and filled your heart with joy". (I believe these words are part of lyrics of SteveI's theme song as well.)

Found this doing a search on Ninkasi. Don't see the line they mentioned at the museum though.

I guess technically it was really the Sumerians. Somebody should change the thread title if they can.

I wouldn't be surpised if some tenure-insulated professor somewhere is trying to change it so the Mesopotamians are swallowed into "Egypt" so things are more simple and more people can get into college who don't deserve to.

Let's LOWER standards so everybody feels better about themselves, whaddya say???!!!

I do love beer though! I don't care if it's from Iceland, if it rocks, I'll drink it!!!!

Tomorrow is a chili cook-off in Hermann, MO. I haven't felt like drinking beer until this afternoon. Must be the warm weather and being home EARLY. I gotta talk to the kids, see what they want to do so I can plan my beer consumption accordingly, and well if the beer doesn't taste as good as it sounds, there's always the Jim Beam!

Yes, the Art Museuem is really cool. I hadn't been there in maybe 5 years and they have added so many new exhibits and displays that I didn't recognize the place. Definitely going to go back and spend a good part of the day there going through some of the new exhibits.

Also if anyone had thought about going to see the Treasures of the Royal Tombs of Ur, it's definitely worth the trip. Some really neat stuff in the exhibit. Friday's are free days too for those of us on a budget.
