Gillick to be named Phils GM

    QUOTE
Pat Gillick will be announced as the Phillies general manager tomorrow, major league baseball sources told The Inquirer tonight.

Gillick, 68, interviewed for the job Friday and Phillies president David Montgomery came away impressed.

Gillick, who was a GM in Toronto, Baltimore and Seattle, won the job over former Houston Astros general manager Gerry Hunsicker, Phillies assistant general managers Ruben Amaro Jr. and Mike Arbuckle and Cleveland Indians assistant general manager Chris Antonetti.

Gillick’s Blue Jays teams won the World Series in 1992 and 1993.

Actually, you could probably do a lot worse than Gillick.

What do you think of it?

I'm on record as saying that I wanted Hunsicker. That being said, I'll give him a chance since I still think he'll be better than Wade.

I just feel that the Phillies made this hire for the wrong reasons.

Like what? Because he's an name with a track record, and thus a safe bet? Or because it probably means Amaro in a year or two?

I think they are bringing Gillick in to groom Amaro. I also think the Phillies would have made Amaro the GM if it wasn't for the PR hit that they would take.

The ownership of this team is terrible.

I think Gillick is a fantastic GM. Built the Blue Jays world title teams and the Mariners 116 win team. Nice hire for the Phillies, even if it's just for the short term.

Bringing in a new GM should be a long term hire, IMO.

I think CSD is right. Should have been Hunsicker.

Could have been worse though. Gillick is a good baseball man.

I don't disagree with that. And I don't disagree that Hunsicker would've been a better fit. I'm just a big Pat Gillick fan. I think he's excellent at all aspects of building an organization and when he leaves in two or three years, a much stronger foundation will be in place.
