Suzuki, Hunter, Chavez lead AL Gold Glove winners
    Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Seattle outfielder Ichiro Suzuki, Minnesota outfielder Torii Hunter and Oakland third baseman Eric Chavez won their fifth straight Gold Gloves on Tuesday.

Boston catcher Jason Varitek, Texas first baseman Mark Teixeira and Toronto second baseman Orlando Hudson were first-time winners, while New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter and Toronto outfielder Vernon Wells won for the second straight season.

Texas pitcher Kenny Rogers won for the fourth time overall and second in a row.

Hudson was surprised he beat out Baltimore's Brian Roberts.

"I would have bet anything that he was going to win," Hudson said. "This has always been a goal of mine, so I've accomplished one of my goals already."

Chavez, Suzuki and Varitek each earned $100,000 bonuses, while Rogers and Wells earned $50,000 apiece and Hunter $25,000.

Gold Gloves, presented since 1957 by St. Louis-based Rawlings, are voted on by managers and coaches before the end of the regular season. They may not select players on their own teams, and they vote only for players in their own league.

NL Gold Glove winners will be announced Wednesday.[/b][/quote]

Chavez is awesome with the glove....at least has been in the past. But, he was injured for a good part of the year.

How did Varitek win one. He can't even catch games when a knuckleballer is throwing.

Of couse, it has nothing to do with offense.

This award has become a joke.

That was my first thought too, but I'm not thinking of who should get it instead, off the top of my head.
          Of course you do.

No. Remember, he dove into the crowd and cut up his face. THat deserves gold glove consideration for sure.

O-Cab should have won it hands down.

Tek is a very good defensive catcher. He doesn't catch Wakefield because it gives him a built in day off once or twice per week. He did have to catch him a few times during the season, and has done so previous seasons. He had one very rough outing catching Wake where he had like 3 passed balls, but that was clearly an exception.

Probably should have been Uribe. Basing it soley off of FPCT is horrible.

I think there's a coast bias. No Royals?
