  • House Panel OKs School Lunch Funding Cut

WASHINGTON - The House Agriculture Committee approved budget cuts Friday that would take food stamps away from an estimated 300,000 people and could cut off school lunches and breakfasts for 40,000 children.

    QUOTE

The action came as the government reported that the number of people who are hungry because they can't afford to buy enough food rose to 38.2 million in 2004, an increase of 7 million in five years. The number represents nearly 12 percent of U.S. households.

"If there are cuts to be made, why should we make them on food stamps?" said Rep. David Scott, D-Ga. "This is the meanest cut of all."

The cuts, approved by the Republican-controlled committee on a party-line vote, are part of an effort by the House GOP to curb federal spending by $50 billion. The food and agriculture cuts would reduce spending by $3.7 billion, including $844 million on nutrition, $760 million on conservation and $212 million on payments to farmers.

"The fact is, our country is going broke," said Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio. "We're spending money we don't have and passing it onto our kids, and at some point, somebody's got to say, `Enough's enough.'"

The $574 million reduction in food stamp spending would affect families who receive food stamps because they receive other non-cash government assistance. The change is estimated to shut up to 300,000 people out of the program.

The restriction also could take free meals away from an estimated 40,000 school children, because children in many states are automatically eligible for school meals when they get food stamps, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

It's now official, we are going to pay for the war, and try to balance the budget with the money meant for food for our children.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding this ... one of the qualifications of the free school lunch is that you get food stamps. The states set that qualification. The states can change it, right? Seems simple enough to me.

Also, this is a GOOD thing. If any government body is going to do this the states are the ones who should be providing this sort of assistance for their citizens.

Federal government should exist for three reasons: 1) Provide common laws/rights, 2) National defense, 3) Make sure states play fair among each other. Anything else is gravy, though it is of the pork flavor.

Actually, it should be the county governments - as they are even closer to the electorate.

But, Yaks & Co. are experts at micromanaging from 50,000 feet.
And, frankly, it has never occured to me that "winning" a debate is important, or that I should be hurt when someone like Airshark or kah, among others (for whom winning a pseudo debate or declaring intellectual superiority over invisible others is obviously very important) ridicule me.

No just pointing out the facts, even if it is better handled at the state or county level we have a program NOW that comes from the feds. And the situation regarding those who are hungry because they can't afford to buy enough food is only getting worse, but we are cutting it to balance a budget that is bloated due to war and bridge building.

If it would be better done at the state level lets do it there, but lets get the state to OK doing it before we take the food out of peoples mouths.

          No sale.

Cuts always have to come first.

Just like in your household budget.

And if they make the cuts and half the states say no? (yeah I know that's the plan)

Givebacks for millionaires and big business = good, food for kids = lets the states do it if the want to.

What about the poor kids who attend schools in the Rockwood school district that will be impacted by the Chrysler decision?

I don't see the problem with this....local municipalities should fit the bill, anyways...

you want less govt. involvement, they pull something and you complain....want it both ways, huh?
