Blues defensive prospect retires
News-Democrat
PEORIA - St. Louis Blues defense prospect Brett Scheffelmaier announced his retirement from professional hockey Wednesday.
The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Scheffelmaier played in two games with the Peoria Rivermen this season and had one assist and two penalty minutes.
He has battled injuries to both shoulders over the last three years and played in only 40 games the last three seasons with the Worcester IceCats and the Rivermen.
Scheffelmaier, 24, was the Blues' sixth-round pick (190th overall) in 2001.
" Definitely one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make," Scheffelmaier told the Peoria Journal Star. "Every day of my life I've been playing toward a career in the NHL. It's a sad day.
"I wasn't getting much of an opportunity here, felt like I was kind of a spare part, so it was time to go."[/b][/quote]
