I don't think he advocates anything, as he is a journalist. I listened to him for years with Hardy, and, if anything, he was right of center.
As for the claims of the authors, I'd need to read the book to assess their reporting/sources. But, the premise is interesting and not at all implausible.
They always admire "good" Republicans (that fall into their little traps and lose elections).
