Damn.
MIAMI -- It may not be news that anyone wants to hear, but Local 10's Don Noe says a storm that will break the current record may be getting ready to form in the eastern Caribbean.
As of late Friday afternoon, the winds in the system were just below tropical storm strength.
If the system reaches tropical storm strength, it will be the first storm in recorded weather history to be named Alpha.
There are six lists of hurricane names that are rotated and contain 21 names each. The letters q, u, x, y and z are not represented. If the list for a year is depleted, the names given are the letters of the Greek alphabet beginning with Alpha.
If Alpha develops into a hurricane, it will be one of a kind. According to the naming policy, if a Greek-letter hurricane becomes a major storm, that letter will be retired to prevent confusion if the 21 available names in any future season are all used.
The weather system is located near the Windward and Leeward Islands east of Puerto Rico, and it is slowly moving west. It is far too early to predict how the storm might develop or where it would go.
