    Aw.....fuck it.

Most regular season wins the past two years, not a single World Series victory to show for it.

I feel worse today than I did last night. Somehow, some way, the name Albert Pujols has got to appear on one of those championship plaques outside the stadium. Let him choose who stays and who goes and who we get next.

We should shoot for the NL wild card next year.

Of course, you know that if we win that Bud will change the wild card rules to make it more difficult for the WC team to advance and, thus, get another screw job.

Unreal that the Cardinals wasted a magnificent play that will always be viewed now in a lesser light.

But the fact of the matter is, talent plays up to its level. And we didn't have the talent -- toeing the rubber or at the plate -- to keep up with the Astros starting three.

It becomes readily apparent why even mediocre starting pitchers like Matt Morris will cash in -- teams are so desperate for those shutdown players that number in the very, very few that they'll toss money at even the imposters. The Red Sox are the perfect example of thinking their bats could make up for a lesser pitching staff; Ramirez, Big Papi, how could that be wrong? Yet, the great Dominicans were swept away in three games.

Epstein was proven wrong on this count and it's certainly likely that you could see Manny traded for pitching talent this offseason. So the cycle will continue and even more money will be wasted on the average pitchers who won't accomplish a thing in the postseason.

The most damning part about the Mulder trade will never be Barton; certainly, we could find any number of good hitters to hit .188 in a postseason series. It'll be Haren, a guy who for the most part, showed himself to be an admirable performer in the Fall Classic.

Even if he doesn't turn out to be the total stud that some are predicting, such individuals are the most precious commodity in baseball and should not be traded under almost any circumstances. The main focus for Major League teams, thus, will never be hitters; the vast amount of resources should remain on developing postseason-capable pitchers.

            Brandon Backe?

We beat Pettitte. This would be a lot easier to handle if it was just dominating pitching. But it wasn't.

Plain and simple, when it was gut check time. Do or die, they couldn't do. And the big three (save possible Oswalt) were just a very manageable factor in that.

Hated giving up Haren at the time, and said so here.

That said, Mulder won us 16 games, lost/or got no decisions on at least 3 others we puked up on him after he pitched wonderfully, and was an integral member of this staff.

                Hindsight remains 20/20.

But that's so subjective, lazy. It may be hard to accept, but I believe we saw the talent level of the current Cardinals laid bare.

The people that can't make it past "gut check time" don't make it onto a Major League roster at all.

SG....Mulder had one job -- to help put the Cardinals over the top in October. He was 0-2 in the NLCS. And he helped give both games away.

He failed. Don't know if Haren would have been better, but it doesn't matter. I've been defending him all year, saying the jury was still out, but Mulder simply didn't do what he was brought here to do.

                          ++

He is like a closer that blows every third save. He may have electric stuff, but if he can't turn it on when his back is to the wall he is useless. As we stand today this was a shitty trade. Hopefully he will make us look stupid for reacting this way next October. I for one hope so and will say so here next year if/when he comes through

Out of curiosity, Is this because you believe Haren would have done better for us this year and pitched better in the Postseason this year, or based on expectations?

At least Haren showed some sack in Game 1 of the WS last year than Mulder did at any time in the NLCS.
