  • Mid-America Airport

OK, well I do remember that it was built to take some of the traffic away from Lambert and so that people on the other side of the river would have a closer airport. But it seems to have been such a big flop. How much money is being thrown at it every year? Didn't it cost something like $15-17 million to build? Does anything fly out of it? I remember the re-incarnation of PanAm flew out of there to like the North Pole or something, but other than that, you may as well store Brent Johnson's five hole there, cuz it's just a big empty building.

Has anybody ever taken a flight out of there?

they should woo a cargo company like DHL to set up base there to compete with FedEx over at Memphis/Indy.

Need leadership - but doubtful it'll happen.

Damn good idea Hans. It's just too bad the area leaders refuse to work together for the betterment of the entire region, not just their piece of turf.

John Baracevic certainly parlayed that bullshit into a nice job.

                Winston,

I think Hans made a very good suggestion. Ft. Worth invested in an airport that serves UPS, or one of those carriers. When I was there last summer, the locals were saying that the move is paying off big time.

Every time suburb/state leaders keep talking about Peotone to help alleviate the traffic at O'Hare and Midway, I think of this airport, and the billions of wasted dollars. And with Lambert half-empty now w/ AA taking over TWA then getting rid of half the flights, this is an airport that'll just never be needed.

But somebody got his buddies millions of dollars, I'm sure.

Speaking of wasting money, how about the major expansion going on at Lambert? Holy moley, the airline industry is falling apart before our very eyes, and Lambert is a virtual ghost town, yet billions of taxpayer's money is being sunk into that.

                      ding ding

Mid America was built so politicians could line their pockets and give fat contracts to their buddies.

                      That is all.

I remember before American Airlines took over TWA, there were daily flights to several international destinations like Frankfurt, London, and Paris. It was awesome seeing a giant TWA 747-400 pulling away from a Lambert gate, knowing that it was flying to Europe.

Now, it's just a local airport, basically. Pretty sad.

Is there any direct overseas flights left out of there?

                            Kev, it certainly couldn't hurt.

But, to do something like that would be to admit failure.

How many politicians -- at any level -- are willing to do that?

They're being ridiculed as flaming failures now. Getting a couple of freight carriers in there may save a bit of face.
