    Chargers get Feeley from 'Fins

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- On the day of the NFL trade deadline, the San Diego Chargers began planning for what should be an interesting offseason.

The Chargers on Tuesday acquired quarterback A.J. Feeley from the Miami Dolphins for quarterback Cleo Lemon and an undisclosed draft pick.

The acquisition of Feeley has more to do with next season when he likely will back up either Drew Brees or Philip Rivers.

San Diego was set to tab Rivers as its quarterback of the future when he was selected fourth overall by the New York Giants in 2004, then acquired in a trade that sent Eli Manning to the Giants.

However, Brees muddled things when he was named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year last season while leading the Chargers to the AFC West title. He was designated the club's franchise player in the offseason and remains the starter in 2005.

It is now likely that the Chargers will trade either Brees or Rivers.

Feeley, 28, was thought to be the Dolphins' quarterback of the future when they acquired him from the Philadelphia Eagles in March 2004 for a second-round pick.

Last season, Feeley played in 11 games with eight starts and struggled, completing 191-of-356 passes for 1,893 yards with 11 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

Feeley has not played in a game this season after losing a training camp battle for the starting job with veteran Gus Frerotte.

In 2002, Feeley's stock rose when he went 4-1 as a starter for the Eagles after Donovan McNabb and Koy Detmer went down with injuries.

Lemon, 26, was the Chargers' third-string quarterback behind Brees and Rivers. He has appeared in just one game in two seasons without throwing a pass.

The Chargers on Tuesday also reportedly traded left guard Toniu Fonoti to the Minnesota Vikings for a draft pick.

Fonoti, 23, has played in just two games this season after losing his starting job to Kris Dielman. Fonoti started all 16 games last season.
