• TLR already voices displeasure @ umpire -- BEFORE the game

QUOTE
Asked about Roger Clemens, La Russa veered off and discussed home plate umpire Wally Bell instead.

"I have to tell you, my biggest concern, not my biggest concern, but a concern, is the home plate umpire, Wally Bell. (Clemens) has got so much command, he's like (Greg) Maddux. He's going to pitch on the edges. If Wally gets really excited and gives him an inch, it's going to be two or three inches. He's tough enough to hit when it's over the plate and if he starts getting a big plate, it's going to be tough for us. I know in our ballpark the umpires will call a good game and not get excited about the home crowd. But you always worry when a guy (pitching) has good command, that he can get somebody (the umpire) excited."

Wow.

The perfect ass.
And, frankly, it has never occured to me that "winning" a debate is important, or that I should be hurt when someone like Airshark or kah, among others (for whom winning a pseudo debate or declaring intellectual superiority over invisible others is obviously very important) ridicule me.

you know, I don't take to umpire problems to excuse a game after it happens (except the crawford one...that was despicable), but before a game?

his players need to coach him on how to calm down.

Well, I hope that doesn't get back to Wally Bell by gametime.

Expect a fine.

maybe he's already jumping on Bell because Bell was the 3rd biggest "homer" among fulltime umpires this season.

In his 34 games behind the plate, the home team won 24 of them (.706).

OK so thats probably not it.

CG,

Is there any doubt the Astros ran to him with a transcript?

Of course they did.

They would be dumb if they didn't.

Perhaps he is calling attention to this so the umpire will be more cognizant of his tendancies..and do the opposite.
