South Side Vandalism

I woke up at 4:30 AM this morning to dogs barking in the alley, which caused my dog to start barking in the house. I peek out of my window and see two people in my alley.

This week is bulk trash pickup so I had used oil in canisters set out to be recycled. I see these people start picking up the canisters and dumping it in the alley. I yelled out to them "Hey", and they took off. I got up and dressed as fast as I could and got to the back to check out the damage. They had only dumped it out on the ground and hadn't really damaged anything, and I could see them way up at the next cross street. I figured they hadn't damaged anything of mine and probably wasn't worth trying to chase them. I wake this morning to find this out. These places are all on my block.

I feel horrible now. I know my safety probably isn't worth trying to catch them but I still saw them and now feel like I made the wrong decision by not trying to chase them.

Also, you should have just called the cops. Never take it into your own hands, you never know who has a gun these days.

I used to hate the idea of calling the cops, especially when I was younger. Now I have no hesitations. I figure I pay taxes, I better use em when I need em.

The guy who wrote that article for the post is my neighbor. His daughter goes to the school. The kids were clearly wasted off their ass, one was helping the other down the alley when I saw them. But like you say, who knows about people these days and when I realized they hadn't done any damage to my property I let them go on, I figured they were just punk ass kids. I'd call the cops and tell them what you know. If nothing else it may help them put a timetable together. Don't worry about. You had no idea what those kids were up to, and calling the cops or chasing them down probably would not have prevented anything, and may have even gotten you hurt.
