So Stan shows up, reads the thread and doesn't post.

That's it. He's not coming on the Cardinals Cruise.

OK - here's my take on tonight's game...

Obviously two good starting pitchers - runs are going to be at a premium. But what I'm looking at in the early innings is pitch efficiency. Even if we don't score a lot of runs early on, if we can run up the pitch count on Pettitte it bodes well for later in the game. Of course, the same holds true for Carp - he needs to get ahead and get quick outs. Both the Cardinals and Houston average 3.68 pitches per plate appearance, so it's a wash in that regard on a season basis, so it's really going to come down to which pitcher can adapt to what is likely to be a small strike zone from McClellan.

Pettitte made 33 starts in 2005 - in only 7 of them did he pitch more than seven innings. Conversely, Carpenter pitched more than seven innings in 17 of his 33 starts. I think the game stays tight until the 6th or 7th inning when the Cardinals put together a multi-run inning against a tiring Pettitte or the Astros middle relievers.

To me, it's going to come down to the bullpens tonight, but I think the Astros are going to need to get one more inning out of their bullpen than the Cardinals, and I think the Cardinals' bullpen is going to show why it was the toughest in the NL this year.

The danger in this series is if the Astros can go straight from the starters to Lidge, but I don't think they can. Either their starters will get tired from pitching deeper in the game, or we hit their non-Lidge relievers.

I think we match up well with the Astros, and I think we're going to take this series. Each game could be tight, but I think we're not going to need a 7th game. I was honestly more nervous heading into the Padres series (due to Peavy twice in five games and their lefty bats) than I am heading into this one. I felt that if we got past SD, we'd win it all. The Cardinals didn't give me any reason to feel any differently in the NLDS - and in fact they displayed how they're simply "professional winners" by knocking off the Padres without really hitting on all cylinders. Let's get off to a good start tonight, and at the very least play one game over .500 for the next 7 games.

Wheeler has been great this year, too, Stan. We need to get to the pen as early as possible. It's not just Lidge anymore. It's, well, Lidge and one other guy.
