DETROIT -- New Detroit manager Jim Leyland took his Pittsburgh connection to the extreme Tuesday by filling out his coaching staff with five others who also wore Pirates uniforms.
Like Leyland, two of them -- Lloyd McClendon and Gene Lamont -- were former Pittsburgh managers. McClendon will run the bullpen and Lamont will be the third base coach.
Former Pirates players Rafael Belliard, Don Slaught and Andy Van Slyke also were hired. Belliard was added as infield coach, Slaught as hitting coach and Van Slyke as first base, outfield and baserunning coach.
McClendon, also a former Pittsburgh player, spent the past five seasons as Pirates manager before being fired Sept. 6. He previously worked as the organization's minor league hitting coordinator in 1996 and was major league hitting coach for the next four seasons.Advertisement
Lamont joins the Tigers after managing Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2005. A veteran of 31 professional seasons, he was Detroit's first-round selection in the June 1965 draft.
Lamont played in 87 games over five seasons with the Tigers. He spent eight seasons as manager of the Chicago White Sox (1992-95) and Pittsburgh (1997-2000).
Belliard spent the past six seasons as a roving minor league infielder instructor in the Atlanta Braves' organization. He played 17 seasons in the major leagues with Pittsburgh and Atlanta.
Slaught spent 16 seasons as a catcher with Kansas City, Texas, the New York Yankees, the Pirates, California, the White Sox and San Diego.
Van Slyke was a three-time All-Star selection and won five NL Gold Glove awards. He played 13 seasons with St. Louis, the Pirates, Baltimore and Philadelphia.
Leyland was hired Oct. 4 to succeed Alan Trammell, let go after three seasons as Tigers manager. Leyland managed Pittsburgh from 1986-96, the Florida Marlins from 1997-98 and the Colorado Rockies in 1999. The Marlins won the 1997 World Series.
The Tigers said they will continue the search for a pitching coach to finalize the staff. [/b][/quote]
