  • Your favorite charity

It's the time of the year at my company when we are asked to donate part of our bi-weekly paycheck to charity. I always give to the United Way because they help all causes. I can still donate to the United Way, but this is the first year that's it's very eary to donate to a specific charity.

My first thought was the Susan G. Komen Foundation Breast Cancer Foundation. My mom survived breast cancer twice, and I worry about the women in my family, so it's a natural choice for me. But I'm not sure that's the area that needs my support most.

My biggest concern is viruses. From avian flu to chicken pox, and AIDS to Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease, viruses are deadly and incredibly difficult to control. Does anybody know of a specific charity that works specifically with viral infections? Or are my intentions misguided?

Don't bother to suggest that I should donate my money to your favorite charity (you).

I know this doesn't aply to what ksbluesfan asked for but for those of you that are interested, St. Vincent DePaul Society is a very worthy charity. They provide clothes, food, furniture, etc. and in addition help families that are behind on their utilities and rent/mortgages. I highly recommend them if you are looking to help those less fortunate. Every parish in the STL area has a conference and all you have to do is call the rectory of the parish in your neighborhood. If anyone has any questions don't hesitate to pm me and I will help you with any questions. Thanks for your consideration.

Why does your company ask you to donate part of your paycheck to charity? That should be none of their GD business.

With any charity, look at how much they keep for "administrative" fees. A good charity will keep back as little as possible, if they keep 40-50%, then I wouldn't give to that charity.

            Just my two cents...

Because it's the right thing to do. Help others that are less fortunate. The company and you get a tax write off and it makes you feel good in the long run.

There's no pressure from my company to contribute. They make it easy for you if that's what you want to do. When I was on a tight budget, I didn't give to charity.

Besides, now when I say "I gave at the office", I'm not lying.

Where did I say it wasn't the right thing to do? I'm not saying you shouldn't give to charity if you have the means to do so.

My point is, why does the company feel they have to be involved? If I decide to donate to charity it should be because I want to, not because my company suggested it.

That's good that they don't pressure you. I kind of got that impression from your first post which is why I asked.

May I suggest Turd Ferguson? It's a little known charity, and we do stuff for other people. So far, I've used the money to take my family to dinner, but on the way, I stopped and helped an elderly woman cross the street. I just try to help.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply that you weren't doing the right thing. I was just speaking in general terms for everybody. My point was that almost all companies do that mainly for the public relations and the tax write-off, I suspect. Like Ks said, it makes it convenient also.

The KTA is a non-profit Subchapter C, Section III, Verse 4 malevolent corporation devoted to social justice, income inequality, and the rebirth of downtown St. Louis by razing the Arch and Old Courthouse to make way for commercial development.

Administrative expenses for this organization typically amount to 95% of expenditures, with the other 5% specifically earmarked for graft.
