Relaxed Texas focused on eve of Oklahoma game

By Kelly Whiteside, USA TODAY

AUSTIN — No. 2 Texas enters its game against Oklahoma on Saturday in Dallas with a five-game series losing streak, but when you poke your head into the huddle, there is little hint of tightness or demons past. Instead, there is comfort and confidence and a few comedians.

Late in Saturday's game against Missouri, a 51-20 win, a mouthy defensive back taunted the Longhorns. "You can't run it to my side," he said.

As the Longhorns approached the line of scrimmage, center Lyle Sendlein glanced up. "Guess what? You know what we're doing?" Sendlein said. "We're running a zone right to your side, and we're going to score, too."

As Sendlein detailed the Longhorns' next play, quarterback Vince Young was still laughing as he took the snap. Sure enough, he handed the ball to Big Henry Melton, a 270-pound freshman, who rumbled right for a 1-yard touchdown run.

"That's the type of stuff we want as a team, everyone having a good time," Young says. "We're going to go out there and play hard and have fun doing it. You don't have to always be uptight doing your job."

At another point during the game, after receiver Billy Pittman had tripped on a few blades of grass, Young made his teammates laugh by telling them in the huddle, "A fan yelled to me, 'Hey Vince, tell Billy I've got a lawnmower in the back of my truck if he wants me to cut that piece of grass.' "

Amid all the life-or-death talk around this rivalry, amid the puffed-chest bravado of the sport itself, amid Texas' dead-serious race for the national title, silliness provides much needed perspective.

Young, along with a bunch of characters on the offensive line, is the ringleader, who takes himself as seriously as Dave Chappelle.

"He laughs and cuts up with them and picks at 'em," coach Mack Brown says.

"He's liable to be dancing in pregame, and he sings while we're stretching in pregame. I heard him singing the other day on the sidelines. In the third quarter. I looked back to see who that was, and it was Vince singing. He likes to have fun. He enjoys competition. He has no fear of failure. None. Which is a great credit to him, and I think that's carried over to our team. They will embrace this week instead of worrying about it."

Which is why Saturday isn't expected to result in the Texas Fold 'Em of the past. It doesn't hurt that Oklahoma (2-2) is having a rebuilding season, and star running back Adrian Peterson is nursing a sprained right ankle. And it also helps that Young's game has matured. He says the last two years against Oklahoma he tried to get by just on physical ability, instead of preparing better mentally for the game. If the offensive line can give Young some time, the Longhorns will eat well in the aftermath: Young treats the guys on Tuesday.

In the second quarter against Missouri, facing a third-and-30, Young bribed his offensive line. "Give me that protection and make that play, and I'll make you any sandwich you all want," he said.

So now you know how tense it can get in a Heisman Trophy candidate's huddle: Deli meats talk.

"It got to the point that I looked at my first receiver, my second, my third and my fourth one," he says. Then, he took off into a Schlotzsky's-sized hole and ran 34 yards.

The Longhorns offensive line, with 102 combined career starts, has plowed the way for the nation's top-ranked rushing offense (310 yards a game). Left tackle Jonathan Scott, who produces his own music and works as a disc jockey, helps lead the Longhorns' "Flow Sessions" on the team bus before and after games. When it gets quiet, Scott will begin to tap a beat on a window, or Young will crank up some "Crunk Juice" on his old-school boom box. Soon the whole bus is singing and clapping. "Even the coaches are tapping," Young says, wearing a white 2Pac and Biggie T-shirt. After games, the duo will freestyle rap, poking fun at mistakes and the players who made them.

Right tackle Justin Blaylock is called "The Dancing Bear" because he has good moves for a 6-4, 329-pounder. Right guard Will Allen is the prototypical lineman, always the first guy to congratulate a teammate after a touchdown. Left guard Kasey Studdard and Sendlein, whose fathers played at Texas, are the cut-ups.

Who makes you laugh the most, Young is asked.

"Kasey Studdard," he says.

Why?

"Because he's silly," Young says.

To promote Young for the Heisman Trophy, Texas' crack PR department, should post these quotes to go along with the mention of his 21-2 record as a starter, his five career fourth-quarter comeback wins, his 65.9% completion rate and his 27 career rushing TDs and 25 passing TDs.

"He's goofy. He acts a fool," says Sendlein.

"He's like a disease. He's like an infection. He just spreads," says linebacker Aaron Harris. Now there's a quote that belongs on a billboard. Vote for Vince. He's infectious as whooping cough.

But let Harris explain: "I guess Vince's personality is the personality of the whole team, a joking, playing, having fun, not-taking-everything-too-seriously-type person. He just brings life. You feed off of him."

After every Sooners loss, Brown has been criticized for being as tight as the marching band's drumline. This year, he has become Mack Daddy Brown, the hip-hop coach whose hook 'em horns sign could double as the hang loose symbol.

Brown says people have asked him about his "change in personality," which has come about as a result of increased security — via a 10-year contract — and a new outlook. He says he no longer takes criticism personally. "I'm having more fun than I ever have because I like to win and I like to see them having fun. We'll have fun this week, and we'll coach hard," Brown says.

Brown recently downloaded 2,000 songs onto his I-Pod, including a few that his players listen to like the entirety of 50 Cent's, The Massacre and a few hardcore raps from Mike Jones. That gesture spoke volumes, Young says, because Brown showed that he cares enough to listen to the soundtrack of the hardscrabble life of some of the players, including Young.

Of course if the Longhorns were 0-4 instead of 4-0, there probably would be less singing and dancing in the locker room, which has its own neighborhoods, but there's a tolerance for all music, from crunk to country. "The way the locker room is set up is the first row is the ghetto, then you move out to the suburbs, then you're in the country, where I am, then the trailer parks to the left of us," Studdard explains.

"In one part of locker room, the guys have a plasma TV, so the guys in the ghetto always say, 'We're going to come get that,' " jokes Young.

On Saturday, the Longhorns hope the silliness continues. A laugher would be even better.

Well...they could be playing Illinois for starters. Or they could simply taunt the Fighting Illini defense, which Ron Turner turned into one of the worst in D-I FB.

Who thought Mizzou football stopped being a joke?
On my mind: How can I shut up the singing English graduate student? How many more lossess will KU's basketball team have than its football team? How will the Rams front office screw up this year?

Sure: we suck and have continuously sucked since 1995. We've also beat Mizzou three (right? or is it two) times in a row. We still suck.

Who thought Mizzou football stopped being a joke?

The people who witnessed better recruiting, beating of Nebraska, bowl game, etc.

A lot they have to show for that too.

They have this to show for it.

By the way, how did Mizzou do in the NCAA tournament last year?

I can't believe you guys took the bait here. Really now.

One doesn't claim to be a powerhouse. They other does, then losses in the first round as a 3 seed!

Maybe, but in recent years similar things have happened to UNC and Arizona. Your list of powerhouses is going to be about the size of two (UConn and Duke).
On my mind: How can I shut up the singing English graduate student? How many more lossess will KU's basketball team have than its football team? How will the Rams front office screw up this year?
