The word 'legend' is abused. Herbie Hancock IS a 'legend'. I saw him at the 5 spot, Vanguard and Gate back in the 60's. Nice sweet memories. Lot's of old Downbeat subscribers (of which I admit I'm one) seem to have thought that in the 70's he sort of 'sold out' to commercialism. So what! Stan Getz did too. It was just nice to see that some of those 'jazz soldiers' made a few bucks. He's a giant!

he also got blamed for being too smooth even in his classic bluenote recordings...with Andrew Hill and Cecil Taylor playing more adventurous modal and outside styles, he kind of gets over shadowed by Horace Silver and Sonny Clark to serious jazzbo's.

As I stare at my Herbie Hancock: the Complete Blue Note Sixties Sessions 6 CD set, I stop and think -- "Herbie is the shit."
Too Smooth? Please. Ain't no such thing.
