  • A reason not to cheer for Dave Checketts

    From Bernie:

Also, Andy Strickland reports that Dave Checketts will offer Larry Pleau a 3-yr contract extension when (if) the sale goes through and he gets the team

I hate Pleau, don't get me wrong (three years? ugh), but I'd rather see Sauer get the short hair cut right off the bat....

You say that like you think Pleau is a good GM?

Good...I'm not so sure what I'd say. He's made some mistakes. Big ones. But in evaluating his time with the Blues, his big problems arose when Laurie bought the team, so I tend to direct more of the "blame" on an owner who didn't know the sport/industry in which he was getting involved.

There are better GMs than Pleau, but I think there are many more who are worse. I think Pleau's strength is in drafting and player development. I believe the new CBA and rules changes will play to his strengths, and I believe (hope) that Checketts is a smarter and more disciplined hockey man than Laurie, though I think it would be tough for him to be worse.

I can take or leave Sauer. Not sure on what basis I should like or dislike him.

You give a guy a 60 million dollars to build a team with, not only do you not win the Cup, but you can't even win the division.

when the deal is completed, we better see the blues do something to bolster their flaccid offense whether its pleau or not. they need to sign a forward ro trade for Handzus.

To be fair, we kept losing the division to a team with $70-$80 million to spend.

[/b][/quote]I used to support the player development angle (it was in a thread on here somewhere)...in that thread, it was proven that quite a few of this draft choices and draft free agents (Sejna, anyone?) haven't been as good as advertised....

If Checketts feels comfortable having Pleau around, so be it...if Checketts' track record is any indication, he won't put up with the continual mediocrity....
