And Al Reyes gone for the duration of the postseason.
He needs Tommy John (elbow surgery).
Game 1: carp
Game 2: mulder
Game 3: Morris
Game 4: TBD. not a lock it's Carpenter. He could be saved for game 5.
Game 5: TBD.
The smart money is Carpenter won't pitch Game 4 if the Cardinals have a chance to wrap it up. He'd be used for Game 5 -- or, if the Cardinals win in four, then he's ready to start Game 1 of the NLCS. But he will pitch Game 4 if they trail in the series.
OK, about Marquis / Suppan: strong feeling is that Marquis would get the start if they use a fourth guy. Why? Because they like the way he pitched against SD this season. Beats me. Marquis allowed 4 er including 3 HRs in a May start vs. the Padres in STL, and in late July at Petco he did hold SD to 2 er in 8.1 innings. But he walked five.
It's also possible that in a tight but high scoring game, they could use Marquis in relief because they think he's their best bet to get them through it. I don't see Suppan in a relief role unless it's one of those lopsided games. We'll see. La Russa keeping options open. Much depends on the series and how it's going.
