  • Al Reyes done for this year...

    QUOTE
ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis Cardinals reliever Al Reyes tore a ligament in his right elbow in the regular-season finale and will require reconstructive surgery, forcing him to miss the playoffs.

Reyes, who was 4-2 with a 2.15 ERA in 65 games with three saves, was the team's top middle reliever. He struck out the side with the bases loaded to get the win on Friday.

Trainer Barry Weinberg said Monday that Reyes had not reported any problems with the elbow before the injury in the sixth inning Sunday against the Reds, and he left the game with a 3-2 count on Felipe Lopez. An exam on Monday morning confirmed the team's suspicions, Weinberg said.

"It was a one-pitch episode," Weinberg said. "He felt some discomfort and knew it wasn't right."

The 35-year-old Reyes had reconstructive surgery on the elbow in 1995. The injury is expected to sideline him for a year.

"It's bad luck," Weinberg said. "It's horrible luck for him."

Weinberg said Jim Edmonds, who didn't start the last two games of the regular season due to shoulder soreness, would be in the lineup for the opener of the Cardinals' first-round playoff series against the Padres on Tuesday.

"He's doing much better," Weinberg said. "He'll be ready to go."[/b][/quote]

Of course....it wouldn't be the playoffs in St Louis unless we lost a player the last week of the season.

That sucks, but at least it wasn't a starter.

At that age, I can't think it would be easy to come back from an elbow injury like that. He was good for us too. We're going to miss him in the bullpen during the playoffs and the World Series.

Unbelievable. Why can't this ever happen to somebody who doesn't produce?

When do we know who's on the NLDS roster?

When he left the game yesterday, I wondered if he had gotten hurt earlier that inning. I think it was two batters earlier, Olmedo hit the grounder back to the mound off of Reyes, and he went after it awkwardly chasing it off the mound.

He walked the next batter and then fell behind Lopez, so I figured it was related to the aftereffects from the comebacker when he left - that perhaps he twisted an ankle or something like that. But by all indications it was a one-pitch "pop" of his ligament.

That's bad for us, and possibly even worse for Reyes, who I believe is a free agent after this year, which with Tommy John surgery looming translates into "unemployed". Do the Cardinals re-sign him, knowing that he is unlikely to throw a pitch in '06, or do we put him on the "Mike Lincoln Scholarship Plan" and sign him to a two-year deal where he makes close to the minimum in '06 and then give him a chance to earn most of his '07 salary through incentives?
