• Homerun Question from 1998

There's a debate raging around the office right now that there was a Cardinal's player that hit his first major league homerun (as a rookie) the same night that McGwire hit #62. I was at that game but can't for the life of me remember if anyone else hit a homerun that night or not. Does any know or remember if there were any other homeruns that night and who might have hit them? We've tried Google and MLB.com and can't find the answer to this.

    Thanks.

    J.D. Drew.

He pulled a hamstring as well.

No, he didn't hit a home run, he just made his debut.

Your people at the office are confused.

I thought Drew hit a homer, too.

        Sorry about that.

Lankford and Gant were the other Cardinals that hit HRs that day.

Here's a link to the box score.

But I'm correct about Drew getting hurt, right?

Thanks a bazillion. Looks like Drew homered the next night, not on the same night.

They all think I am absolutely brilliant now. They can't figure out how I got all this info and the box score so fast when they've been trying to look it up for the last 2 hours.

It appears Nancy Drew (or J.D.L.--which ever you prefer) pinch hit in that game. I'm sure he "tweaked" something though.

The majority of the guys I work with here are such sports know-it-alls to the point of being quite amusing. They've been talking about the whole homerun issue for the good part of the last 2 or 3 hours. I finally asked them exactly what they were trying to figure out and that I would have an answer for them in a few minutes. It helps to have access to smart people.
