La Russa -- who wasn't pleased with some unflattering McGwire columns in the Post-Dispatch the last couple of days (written by Miklasz and then Burwell) -- got steamed today. An ESPN reporter asked a rather vanilla question about how La Russa thought McGwire would be received by fans tonite at Busch.
La Russa said, "I'll see you all later. That question shouldn't even be asked." Walking away, La Russa said, "we've had a positive, great season, a great 40 years."
Then in the tunnel, heading toward the field, La Russa took his fungo bat and slammed the wall with it -- twice -- breaking it.
OK, then....
Marquis and not Suppan will start vs. Reds tomorrow... this is significant because it tells us that if the Cardinals are playing S. Diego in the first round, Marquis will get the start in Game 4. And not Suppan. La Russa wouldn't go that far. He said he's starting Marquis because he's pitched well against the Reds and that gives the Cardinals a better chance to win.
That's the party line.
But La Russa and Duncan are creatures of routine and he wouldn't lock Marquis into a start tomorrow unless he planned (tentatively) to bring him back for a start in the NLDS. The Padres' scout here at Busch (a fellow by the name of Ted Simmons) fully expects to see Marquis pitch against the Padres in Game 4 (after Morris works Game 3).
Lineups:
Eck 6
Edm 8
AP 3
Sand 7
Walk 9
Grudz 4
Molina 2
Nunez 5
Mulder
Freel 7
F Lopez 6
Dunn 3
Aurilia 4
La Rue 2
Kearns 9
Encarnarcion 5
Demorfia 8
Keisler 1
enjoy the game...
