Man dies in fall from Arch parking garage
    By Bill Bryan
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    09/26/2005

A 22-year-old man from Marshall, Mo., fell about 40 feet to his death early Monday as he ran from a federal park ranger in a parking garage near the Gateway Arch, authorities said.

The man's name was being withheld until his wife could be notified.

Authorities said the man was stopped by a park ranger about 3 a.m. as he was driving out of a garage at Second Street and Washington Avenue. When the ranger asked the man to submit to a field sobriety test, the man bolted and ran, authorities said. The man jumped over a railing, obviously unaware there was a 40-foot drop to a sidewalk below, authorities said.

He was pronounced dead at St. Louis University Hospital.

They busted a friend of mine for having an open container in that garage, the fine was huge because it's a national monument.

In years past, the security entrances were set up at the entrance to the park from the garage so that you were searched on the way in and no open containers were allowed out of the park and into the garage area or anywhere else outside the security area. I haven't gone in that way the last couple of years though so they could have changed it, but the "front" entrances are still the same policy.
