The Good

-Ladies and gentlemen, we have real, honest-to-god defensive tackles. They tackle, they play hard, they have a little nasty in them, and they're no longer the worst in the league. Pickett is having a stellar season and Kennedy ain't so bad either. These two guys have been playing extremely well for the last three weeks. Kudos to them for stepping it up (though, I'm pretty sure its a contract year for Pickett).

-Tory Holt ... simply the best route runner in the business. Week after week Rams fans get to seem him embarass corner backs in route. Pacman Jones looked like he belonged yesterday, but Tory made him his bitch. Easily one of the best WRs in the league.

-Run defense. Despite getting gashed early, the Rams really played very good run defense. They eventually held Brown and Henry to around four yards a carry, which is probably good enough against a team as determined as the Titans to run the ball and with such a quality offensive line.

-The safeties have played like horse droppings...until yesterday. Hawthorne had an outstanding game and Arch did too. They still can't guard a tight end, but what's new? If they're jarring the ball loose with hits and getting interceptions, I can live with 7 catches (or whatever) by the tight end.

-Bulger played a gritty game yesterday. Other than the two fumbles -- one of which was not his fault, IMO -- he looked better yesterday than he has all season. I'm afraid we're starting to see a little Warner in him, by which I mean he gets hit so much that he's becoming fumble-prone. But after an abysmal first quarter, he played at a high level yesterday.

-Holy hell, who knew Marshall could still play. Now I'm really wondering why we don't run the ball more. 30 or so runs a game between SJack and Marshall would absolutely devastate defenses and help us a ton.

-Where did all those turnovers come from? Its nice to see our defense making plays again. They get mad love for getting the Rams back into the game and to keep me from throwing the TV out of my second story window after the first quarter.

-Barron looked OK for a rookie who has "no clue" what he is doing. Learn the offense already kid, we need a talented RT.

    The Bad

-The offensive line, save the RT slot. Why isn't this under "the ugly", you ask? Well, because they played really well...some of the time. Its fairly clear to me at this point -- as it was the last five years -- that the offensive line is the key to our team. As they play, so the team goes. Its too bad that this hasn't been a bigger draft priority in recent years.

-Orlando Pace. He's the best on the line, but this guy is no longer a Pro Bowler. He's getting beat badly at least once a game. He needs to step it up. Timmerman falls into this category as well, but he's injured so I'm cutting him some slack.

-Brandon Manumalenuna. This guy is a huge waste of cap space. For every good play he makes -- and he does make some good plays -- he completely blows one. The INT was his fault; he's got to make that catch.

-Corner backs. Our corners are still susceptible to getting beat and beat badly every now and then. While Groce looked decent yesterday, Fischer played a poor first half. Sadly, our draft picks don't look like they're going to provide help.

-The refs. That lateral play was BS. Yeah, I'm a homer.

-The return game. At least Johnson has speed, but what is Cason still doing on the roster?

    The Ugly

-Penalties. How many penalties are we going to keep making before Martz instills some discipline in these guys? This drives me nuts. Nuts.

    -LB pass coverage. Non-existent.

-Pass rush...we don't finish. We've been putting pressure on (which is good), but we need to actually finish it off. Our defense is like night-and-day when we get a good pass rush.

-Martz actually adjusted at halftime, but this team was NOT ready to play in the first half. We are lucky we got it together (thanks to the D).
On my mind: How can I shut up the singing English graduate student? How many more lossess will KU's basketball team have than its football team? How will the Rams front office screw up this year?

Titans = McNair, and a bunch of guys.

We've lost to a bad team, and gone down to the last minute to beat two mediocre teams. Color me impressed when we actually beat a good team.

Good summary, but I disagree with a couple points.

      - I thought the pass rush was pretty decent, especially in the second half. McNair took a lot of good hits. LL was a beast all day. Green had a big sack. DTs jumped offsides WAY TOO much yeasterday.

      - Although the OL play was brutal, Bulger continues to run into sacks. Can Claude Terrell be any worse than either of our other two guards? Pace was not good.

      - Marshall played well, but the fumble was awful. No excuse for that from a future HOFer, especially when we had a chance to put them away at that point.

      - I thought Barron played great. I don't know for sure, but I can't remember VandenBush getting to MB after the switch. SJ ran behind him for 5+ yards on the first play after the switch. Have a seat, Mr. Sapiaia.

      - Manumalauna (sp) is beyond awful. I hate to wish an injury on the guy, but he can take a seat next to Rex Tucker on the bench. We are a better team w/o him.

      - Tory Holt is silly good. He twisted Pac Mac (I think) up like a pretzel on his second TD.

      - Shaun McDonald should be given strict orders to fair catch every punt. No more running backwards.

jj twiggs - A great family restaurant

Dear God, KBF here. I'd just like to say thanks, once again, for allowing Dusty Baker and I to live during the same time period. Every time I think he's given me his last gift -- overpitching Prior in the playoffs, getting cocky in Game 6 vs. the Angels, blowing another game for the Cubs -- he does something stupid like pitching to Albert Pujols. Thy will be done, baby!!!!!

You forgot about Jackson dreaming on the not-a-forward-pass fumble, letting that dude run for forty yards before he went and got him.

If TN didn't self-destruct three-quarters of their drives, we'd have lost by 30 points.

This team is going to be no better than last year, although they'll get to 8-8 a different way.

True, but if we don't turn the ball over and committ a thousand penalties, we win going away. Despite all the mistakes, the Rams had a lot of highlights yesterday. If we cut down on stupid mistakes (fat chance with Mad Mike at the helm), then we've got a team that's better than 8-8.

Well, see, that's the whole problem. This team ISN'T going to cut down on the 2,000 mistakes per game, because they have an asshole for a coach. The only reason we won yesterday is because TN out-mistaked us. If we play a merely competent team -- not great or good; merely competent -- we lose.

And if the OL doesn't get its shit together, 8-8 will be a pipe dream.

              Yawn. Go Cards.

This defense is definitely better, especially the Linebackers. One of the key plays of the game yesterday (besides the obvious, not seen in a year and a half, game changing defensive turnover), was that 3rd and short late in the game deep on our end. We didn't stuff the play, and Brown went around the outside and was tackled after a 5 yard gain by Clayborne. Though giving up a 5 yard gain on a 3 and short is not good for great defenses, it was a quantum leap for this team. There is no doubt in my mind that last year, that play would have gone for a 20 yard touchdown. Instead, a player makes a one-on-one tackle and we live to force a FG and win the game.

No this team is not a good one. They were one non call on a holding penalty away from getting completely run out of the building. There are not many good teams in the league though.

Next week will be tough on the road playing a team coming off a bye. Strahan will, once again, absolutely kill us (this game smells like the Fred Miller game against the titans in 99). I'm hoping against hope, that Martz gives Barron some help on that side, but his stubborness probably won't allow it. At least that game yesterday was entertaining.

If TN doesn't jump on 3-2 on our 15 (or whatever), we almost certainly lose.

                  They out-dumbed us, thank God.

Why do you only have positive vibes with the Cards, Reg? This team can get better at mental mistakes and I think they will. It's too easy to blame everything on the head coach and Martz is everyone's favorite target in this town. But his teams don't usually commit a huge amount of penalties, so I think they'll get better. They've played 3 pretty average to bad games now and yet they're still 2-1. I'll take that any day of the week. The defense is still a work in progress as is the O-line but I think both will improve. I think 10-6 is a possibility.

Yeah, trouble following that line of reasoning and the not known for mistakes one. Seems to be a different coach and team we are talking about
