  • What artist did you most identify with

when growing up? who were you? who did you want to be (no greatwhitelionsnakes please))

    Janis Joplin

She's the best thing I've ever been fortunate enough to hear live or taped. She's the absolute best female singer I have ever heard. Goodness to Lucinda and Karen Carpenter. Gwen has great hair, but I try to think while JJ and BB goes and Janis just HAD it.

It's not possible to do what JJ did. There can be happy but there can't be happiest. Salready stablished.

    God Bless that water tower.

I didn't connect with any musical artists like that

I wanted to be a baseball player or an astronaut...Johnny Bench and Neil Armstrong were my heroes

That is a great question -

Unfortunately as a young black male about the same age as Michael Jackson - much of my childhood was spent in envy of this freak who seemed to have everything -

As I got older I got a chance to get into Marvin Gaye and others.

But nothing rocked the boat like Parliament and Bootsy.

Johnny Hodges, alto saxophonist for Duke Ellington, for at least 40 years. There were other players who seemed to be much more advanced technically, but I have always thought his sound was one of the purest things of beauty in all of music. I still play my alto saxophone every day of my life. I play my tenor more---but I enjoy the alto sax more than any other instrument I play.

Jerry Lee Lewis, until he married his 13 year old cousin. She is sixty years old now.
Never dreamed the day would come when I would have to sit on the piano stool he broke.

Lee Morgan, trumpet player and hard bop iconoclast.
Played with Art Blakey's Jazz Messangers during their peak period.
He had hollywood script life that included playing with Coltrane on Blue Trane at like 19 years old.
He had a long battle with drugs (heroin), and finally beat his addiction only to be shot and killed while playing on stage by a jilted ex-lover at the age of like 32.

That's a tough one to say who I identified with.........grew up on Neil Diamond, Merle Haggard, Barry White, and Kiss when I was a kid in the '70s, so pretty much got into music off these artists.....

Geddy Lee of Rush made me want to pick up a bass back in the mid-80s..............

where have I ended up?........playing in an outlaw country band (Honky Tonk Rodeo), playing the stuff I loved the most growing up.......Merle, Waylon, Willie, Cash, Paycheck, Gram Parsons, etc..........

I have went through many phases, different styles of bands and influences since I have been playing music.......but old-school country it what I have always identified with the most......
