CINCINNATI — Third baseman Scott Rolen on Wednesday made his first appearance in the Cardinals clubhouse since having season-ending shoulder surgery Aug. 29.
Wearing an elaborate sling with two pads attached to help support his left arm, Rolen said he remains optimistic about participating in spring training and that he will continue rehabilitating in Florida near his Bradenton home.
"I had the surgery. I'm going to be in a sling for another week or so, then we'll go from there," Rolen said after meeting with manager Tony La Russa, general manager Walt Jocketty and assistant general manager John Mozeliak before Wednesday's game against the Cincinnati Reds. "The shoulder's been repaired. Everything is moving ahead."
Rolen was examined Wednesday afternoon by Cincinnati Reds orthopedist Timothy Kremchek, who performed a two-hour operation that required fixing five screws to the third baseman's injured shoulder to reattach the surrounding capsule.
Rolen said he plans to attend the team's final home stand and will suit up and travel with the club during its playoff run. Not up for a media show Wednesday, he declined an invitation to watch the game from a suite. "I'm really not up for it right now," he said. "I'm still wearing (the sling). I think when most people see it they know what it means."
Aware La Russa had been questioned about his absence from the team last weekend when the Cardinals clinched the division against the Chicago Cubs, Rolen said there was no intrigue involved.
He merely suffered a reaction to antibiotics after his surgery and developed strep throat.
"I didn't eat for a week," he said. "I wasn't exactly in great shape. I plan to be with the team when they get back to St. Louis. I'm going to be sitting in the dugout during the postseason if they want me. I certainly wasn't bailing or abandoning the team because I wasn't in Chicago."
Except to say, "I changed my mind," Rolen did not elaborate on his choice of Kremchek as surgeon after the club distributed a release Aug. 21 that stated Rolen had "elected" to undergo an operation with Cardinals team orthopedist George Paletta serving as lead surgeon and Kremchek assisting. Paletta performed an initial operation on Rolen on May 13. The switch did not sit well with the club, which made known its displeasure to his agents, Seth and Sam Levinson.
On Wednesday Rolen played down any suggestion of a rift between him and the team but did confirm he had placed his West County home on the market.
"Never mind that I bought another one a little further out," he said.
