  • Rita -- Political Predictions

I predict that local, state and federal officials will do a much better job in the after math of Rita.

As a result, black leaders such as Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton will employ the race card. When whites are threatened by hurricanes, they are protected. Not so when blacks are in the storm's path.

    Agree or disagree?

The only way you can get white people to care about racism is to suggest they shouldn't use the 'n' word.

Boy do they get worked up.

I think there are a pretty fair amount of blacks in the Galveston-Houston area. But yeah, definitely more middle to upper class whites in that area than in New Orleans.

I disagree that Jackson and those other guys will say those things. Or at least they shouldnt. I think that after what happened in New Orleans and elsewhere the general consensus will be that all levels of government will go way out of their way to make sure they dont fuck this up - regardless of race or who is involved.

You guys can't actually believe 10,000 white people would have been left dehydrating and hungry for days, do you?

I really don't think that would be tolerated in this country.

It was a class thing, not a race thing. Get it straight, assjohnbrown.

I'm sure the usual supects will say the usual things.

Government will definitely not let things happen as before though. In fact, with the likely sucess of the preplanning, I bet ol' W gets a poll boost in the next few weeks (probably has hit his nadir already).

That's the other side of the blame game. When things go well (or in this case, better), people feel good about those at the top, whether deserved or not, just as they blame them for things that go wrong, whether deserved or not.

I don't believe that those rescue individuals on the local, state and national level failed to do their job because of the color of the victims. Moreover, I don't think the mayor, the governor or the president failed to act because the victims were black.

But hey, it's a free country. If you choose to think the worst of people, so be it.

Actually, that may be the one factor that does have some relevance, even if global warming is limited and isolated. Even a small rise in Gulf Surface temp can be the difference between a cat 3 and 5. Don't know that it could create more, but certainly could increase intensity.

Not convinced it is, just saying it may not be as asinine as first thought. Even if the warming is completely cyclical and not influenced, understanding its impact can help forecasts, predictions and emergency planning.

But science sucks. We should just all screw science, shut-up, and let God and Dubya figure out how things should happen
