RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Ron Francis, one of the NHL's career leaders in games played, goals, assists and points, announced his retirement Wednesday, ending his 23-year career.

Francis, 42, was a four-time all-star who played for Hartford, Pittsburgh, Carolina and Toronto. He ranked among the league's all-time leaders with 1,731 games (third), 549 goals (19th), 1,249 assists (second) and 1,798 points (fourth).
"As a kid growing up in the little city of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, I dreamed of one day playing in the NHL, but never did I expect it to be as much fun as it turned out to be," Francis said in a statement released on the NHL Players' Association Web site. "I thank everyone who I came in contact with during this long ride for their contributions to making it fun."

Francis was a part of Stanley Cup-winning teams in Pittsburgh in 1991 and 1992, and helped the Hurricanes make a surprise run to the Cup finals in 2002.

Francis also was a three-time winner of the Lady Byng Trophy, awarded to the player exhibiting sportsmanship and gentlemanly play combined with playing ability.[/b][/quote]

One of the most underrated hockey players ever...his career numbers are on par with some of the greats, and yet most people who don't follow hockey (and even some who do) have no idea what this future HOFer has done during his 23 seasons of NHL play...

    Good luck Ron...

It is sad to see the Old Guy parade like this. One Name that I would like to add to the list to see go is Stevey Y.

Man he was scary on Pitts.

Another guy that remind me of Chopper, a real professional who just did his job without any of the extraneous bullshit so many want to have along with the sport.
              Thanks for the memories Ron.

There is your answer to why he is "underrated" . Played in Hartford, Pittsburgh and Carolina. Had he played for the Rangers or Boston, he might have gone down as one of the all time best players. He may still be, but just isn't recognized as such because he didn't get a lot of pub. Good hockey fans know he was a great player though.

I never knew until I read the TSN article that he is only one of two players to score 20 goals in 20 different seasons.

The other player was Gordie Howe.
