  • FA Cup Final

After the jet-lag diminished I sat down and watched 2 of the most tenacious, desperate semi-finals I've ever seen. Manny U went through against the Arsenal yesterday and today, the unthinkable happened, Millwall (think Oakland Raiders' fans) beat Sunderland 1 nil to go through and it was a riveting and, frankly, one of the most mesmerizing games I've ever watched.

The REAL 'Chuckie' from Childs Play, Mr Wise tormented Sunderland and (unlike what ANYONE could have expected) his team played with a combination of furore AND elegance AGAINST ALL ODDS and took it too Sunderland who were the 'butchers' in this match. One red-card for them (thoroughly deserved) and Millwall played like they were defending their neighbourhood from the Barbarian invaders.

It was just too good to describe in words.

The only downside is that ALL of Europe is shaking now knowing that the Millwall bullies are in Europe next year and Manny U better be focussed on May the 22nd or these guys could very well be the the contemporary version of David vs. Goliath.

    It was something to behold!

p.s. The Southeast London folks behaved well. Unlike the Gunners and Manny U supporters did yesterday when the cops took the batons to them.

I am no fan, but you gotta at least like a game where the fans get beat by the police afterward.
Be passionate about what you believe in, or why bother.

      Lode,

Did I read this right....that the Millwall chairman will run around London naked now?

How bad are the Milly fans? Links? Will they travel to Cardiff?

I've read where the Portugal cops are training w/ the Korean cops to deal w/ the English fans. Can't wait for Euro 04.

That's right. I heard the interview on the radio where he said he had just told the team that if they win he'd streak through Trafalgar Square.

The Millwall supporters club claim that they're 'kinder and gentler' than in the old days but we'll see. They'll definitely have a huge presence in Cardiff. As respects Europe next year for them I think the continentals are scared silly about an influx of these guys though. Respects the hooligans in general getting into Portugal in June....ALL of the exit and entry ports have photographs of the main characters so they won't get through. But, it'll be the same old problem with these young louts getting drunk and misbehaving again. I'm sure there will be some of that element there no matter what precautions they take in Portugal.

I just want to say that the Celtic supporters were given UEFA's award for best away fans.

There were 70,000 of us in Seville last year. I slept in the back of a taxi. The driver charged us $10 apeice. Had a blast. And no arrests even though we got hosed in the final.

          OK, enough. Sorry.

I just can't see where I would get hammered on cheap champange and then run wild before/during/after a match.

I'd rather sing the songs and boo the Huns.

            :-)

Celtic and Manny U are my heart-felt Catholic (Irish) teams so I identify mate. But, to put Scots into perspective, I should tell you that the first time I came to England to meet my in-laws, after an 11 1/2 hour flight from L.A. my new bride and I found our way over to Kings Cross to head up to Lincolnshire on British Rail.

We were already exhausted and then, unbeknownst to either of us, this was the day of the Home Final when Scotland, for the first time in modern memory, beat England at Wembley.

MOST of those kilt-wearing drunks got on the same train with us as it's final destination was Edinborough.

Suffice it to say, it took many years for that din to leave my ears. They made Millwall supporters sound as quiet as Canadian fans.

I was biased for many years until I got round to playing the Old Course and Glen Eagles and (working with some Scots) realized that it was like when we beat the Yankees in '64.

            OK. That's OK.

No Treble for Gunners this year...a shame, from my perspective, as they were primed...I'm sure you're smiling, though, Lode...thanks for the recaps...great stuff
