    Scouting Report:
Despite a weighty ERA in the big leagues, Snell -- who was just recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis -- went 11-3 with a 3.70 ERA in Triple-A. Snell has started two games and appeared in 12 so far this season. He has made one appearance against St. Louis this year, coming in relief. The appearance was his Major League debut and he gave up a solo home run to John Mabry.

With one more win, Carpenter will tie Matt Morris for the most victories by a Cardinals pitcher since Bob Gibson. He's two away from the franchise high since World War II. The Cardinals have won the last 16 times that Carpenter has taken the mound.
Game preview will be posted when available.

I've started 2 game day threads, and I'm 2-0. Those were with Suppan. I think I deserve a Carpenter start.

          Carpenter shoots for 22nd victory
          Pittsburgh (57-86) at St. Louis (92-53), 7:10 p.m. CT
          By Matthew Leach / MLB.com

You're unlikely to find a much more promising matchup for the Cardinals than the one on tap Tuesday night at Busch Stadium, in the seventh-to-last regular-season game scheduled for the old ballpark.
It's Chris Carpenter -- the hottest, and arguably the best, pitcher in the National League -- taking the mound for the homestanding Cards. Pitching for the visiting Pirates is rookie Ian Snell, a promising right-hander, but a young man who thus far has a big league ERA pushing 7.00.

Of course, the Pirates could call on the great Ray Kremer, two-time ERA champ in the 1920s, and it might not matter against Carpenter. The Cardinals ace has been simply unbeatable recently. The last 16 times Carpenter has taken the mound, the Cardinals have won. He's 13-0 in that span and has gone at least seven innings in each of those starts.

If Carpenter picks up win No. 22, he'll join teammate Matt Morris as the only Cardinals pitchers to reach that total since Bob Gibson won 23 in 1970. That, coincidentally, is also the last Cy Young season by a Cards hurler -- another list Carpenter is likely to join soon.

          Pitching matchup:
          PIT: RHP Ian Snell
          • 0-2, 6.84 ERA in 2005
          • Has never faced STL

          STL: RHP Chris Carpenter
          • 21-4, 2.21 ERA in 2005
          • 3-0, 1.50 ERA vs. PIT in 2005

          Player to watch
There's a good chance you'll see another Albert Pujols-Jose Mesa matchup. Pujols is likely to be held out of the lineup due to a strained adductor muscle in his right leg, but he's likely to pinch-hit again. And against Mesa, Pujols is now 6-for-9 with two doubles, a home run and two walks.

          Quotable
"I have total confidence that whatever the number is, it's not going to change the way we play. We'll come out tomorrow ready to play and let everything else fall into place." -- Tony La Russa, on the Cardinals' magic number, which is down to four.

          Quick hits
Carpenter was 49-50 before joining the Cardinals. He's 36-9 in a St. Louis uniform. ... Carpenter is the most efficient starter in the National League, averaging 13.83 pitches per inning pitched. ... Carpenter hasn't permitted more than two walks in a start since May 23. ... Jim Edmonds is 8-for-41 (.195) in September with just one walk. However, he has hit four home runs this month. ... Since returning from the disabled list, Yadier Molina has 10 walks and has struck out just five times in 77 at-bats. ... Edmonds and Pujols have four home runs each in September. The rest of the Cardinals have four combined.

Carpenter has an eight-pitch inning, then Snell comes out and walks Eck on four pitches.

That's the difference between us and them.
