...doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results. Good fucking lord, Mike, we're making the same mistakes we've been making the last three years. I'd be stunned if the Rams aren't the most penalized team in the league since Martz took over -- we consistently lack discipline.

Overall, we played well enough to win. The offense did OK and the defense just really gave up two or three bad plays. If we didn't have drive-killing penalties, stupid special teams play, and an idiot coach, we would've won by 10 points or so. In my mind, all three of these problems come from a lack of discipline. Its time to take a zero-tolerance stand on this crap. Actually, that time is long over due.

Anyway, on to the good, the bad, the ugly.

    The Good

-Jeff Wilkins. He had a good game.

-Marc Bulger had a good game. A couple of poorly thrown balls, but not very many. His completion percentage would've been astronomical if the freaking receivers would hold on to more balls. Considering this was the first game of the year, I thought he looked pretty good...especially considering he was being thrown around like a rag doll. The INT was the only negative, but I won't blame him for trying to make something happen -- coach should've been calling run plays anyway.

-Faulk. Considering his role, he looked good.

-Jackson -- OK, the final stats weren't great. But when he got good blocks, he looked like he could be effective. We gave up on him (shocking that Martz lost patience with the run) too. Not great, but not bad either.

-Run defense. Holy crap, we played some. Only one semi-good run allowed all day and I think I only counted two or three badly missted tackles. The off-sides penalties were obnoxious, but not too bad.

-Tory Holt...he made plays when they counted. I thought he looked terrific.

    -Turnovers...hey, we actually got some.

    The Bad

-Too many dropped balls today. Kevin Curtis dropped a sure-fire TD that tagged him in the numbers. Curtis read his own press a little too much this summer, I think.

-Blitz pick up and run blocking. If we discount Rex Tucker's horrendous...nay, ghastly...performance, then the O-line was mediocre at best. How did we let so many freaking 49ers run free all day? Also, there is no excuse for not knocking their smallish line off the line of scrimage more.

-I know everyone will think the pass defense was terrible, but I think it was simply bad. The first TD was a helluva catch and the CB and safety were in a position to make a play. Other than that, Rattay only threw for 180 or so. They've got to get better for sure, but I wasn't nearly as frustrated by the CBs as I was some other things.

-Red zone offense. We've sucked at this for two or three years now. We really have trouble punching it in. Is it so wrong just to run straight ahead, behind Pace?

    The Ugly

-OK, I'm glad we emphasized special teams this year because I can't imagine how fucked up they would be if we kept blowing them off. The second that dude stepped on the out-of-bounds line I saw the rest of this coming. Note to management -- it ain't the coaches' fault. Still, its possible our special teams got worse this year.

-The pass rush. We saw it on the first drive and the last drive. Did it take a shower in between?

-Mad Mike. A time out with less than five seconds off the clock. That has got to be some sort of record. What a dick.

-Rex Tucker. Honestly, someone should just put him out to pasture right now. Sappaia was better last year than this guy was today. If he ever lines up over Bryant Young ever again, Young should thank him for revitalizing his career. Then Tucker should bend over and just take it so he can get it over with already.

-Mad Mike, part II. A 2 point conversion? You dildo, we could've just kicked a field goal at the end of the game and won had you kicked the point after.

All I'm asking is this one simple thing -- can we please, please try to find new ways to lose games? The combination of penalties, special teams, and gutless defense is getting old.
On my mind: How can I shut up the singing English graduate student? How many more lossess will KU's basketball team have than its football team? How will the Rams front office screw up this year?

I about pissed myself when I saw the challenge flag thrown right off the bat.

That's the underlying theme of the season, methinks.

I knew the Rams were fucked when he did that.

        Literally, right off the bat.

add to the ugly, the offensive line (although Bulger must take some of the blame for holding on the ball too much and too lon) for giving up 7 sacks.

I don't buy the argument that a lot of those sacks were coverage sacks today. The first two by Bryant Young, he practically blew right by Tucker. Plus, I'm not going to blame Bulger for trying to make things happen and holding the ball a little longer. Martz never has encouraged him to chuck it away anyway. He's being coached to do that.

I am not a Rams fan by any means (my team beat them yesterday ), but is there any chance that the ownership would actually shit-can Martz during the season? Or would they pussy-foot around the situation and wait for the season to end before making the decision?

If the Rams get off to a start like they did in 2002, then it's a possibility.
