Damphousse Retires After 18 Seasons and 1,378 Games

TORONTO (AP) -- Vincent Damphousse retired Wednesday, ending an 18-year NHL career in which the star center won a Stanley Cup title with Montreal in 1993.

The 37-year-old Damphousse, a four-time All-Star, also played for Toronto, Edmonton and San Jose. He was drafted by the Maple Leafs in 1986 and finished with 432 goals and 773 assists in 1,378 games.

''I loved getting up every morning and heading to the rink, and I will miss being in the dressing room with the guys,'' Damphousse said in a statement released by the NHL Players Association. ''However, I'm looking forward to the next stage of my life.''

Damphousse, an NHLPA vice president, made his announcement a day after New Jersey defenseman Scott Stevens retired.
