LB Thomas sent to Green Bay
    By Jim Thomas
    Of the Post-Dispatch

A trade involving Rams linebacker Robert Thomas has been rumored for weeks. And now it has happened.

The Rams traded Thomas on Saturday to the Green Bay Packers for cornerback Chris Johnson. Thomas, a first-round draft pick by the Rams in 2002 out of UCLA, started 32 games for St. Louis in his first three NFL seasons. Thomas’ best year was 2003, when he finished with 102 tackles, tied for fifth on the team, in just 12 games.

Thomas was reduced to a role off the bench this preseason with the free-agent additions of veteran linebackers Chris Claiborne and Dexter Coakley. Johnson was a seventh-round draft pick by Green Bay in 2003 out of Louisville. But in two seasons with the Packers, he did not play in a game. He missed his rookie year with a knee injury, and missed last season with a leg injury.

The Rams are thin at cornerback because of Jerametrius Butler’s season-ending knee injury and Terry Fair’s neck injury.
    RIP Chris Jones 1971-2009
    You'll never be forgotten.

    Excellent trade.

Surprised we didn't try to make Thomas a corner frankly.
I can only hope that this is mostly to get rid of salary.

I can only assume this means he would have been cut...

This ran in Milwaukee just the other day:

        Roster spot up for grabs
Three cornerbacks engaged in close battle

Green Bay - Third-year man Chris Johnson, second-year man Jason Horton and rookie Leigh Torrence appear to be neck-and-neck in a race for what is expected to be the final berth at cornerback on the Green Bay Packers' roster.

At cornerback, Al Harris and Ahmad Carroll are the starters, backed by Joey Thomas and Mike Hawkins. At safety, Nick Collins and Mark Roman are the starters backed by Earl Little and Marviel Underwood.

The Packers had nine defensive backs on their 53-man roster for opening day in five of the last six years. Eight jobs appear spoken for but the ninth might not be decided until the exhibition finale tonight against Tennessee.

All National Football League teams must reach the 53-man limit by 5 p.m. Saturday.

Johnson, a seventh-round draft choice from Louisville in 2003, wasn't able to practice until Aug. 14, almost two years to the day after he suffered a major knee injury. He hasn't had much impact in camp but, with what once was 4.25-second speed for 40 yards, can't be dismissed.

"He looks like a guy who hasn't worked as much as some of the others," secondary coach Joe Baker said. "I think Chris is still a work in progress but a guy with a lot of ability."
        Dude. Can. Fly.
