  • ARRRH ahoy a Cable Pirate!!!

as some of you may know, i think pay television is a scourge on humanity...not the content mind you, just the ever inflating prices while they jam commercials down our throat.

So i am moving 2 miles west of my current residence and the cable line in my new apt (two family flat downstairs) is hot (basic comcast espn, comedy central etc). sweet.

here's the problem. the phone/DSL provider (verizon) is a rippoff and cable inernet is faster. RCN offers a good deal for phone service and cable internet.

thus i want to order internet and phone through RCN and still get the Comcast cable free. if i order through RCN for cable Internet and phone and since they will be using they existing cable, will they be obligated to notify comcast that the line is hot? or more likely, will they be able to tell in the first place and try to force me to buy their cable?

please help this cheapskate anti-cable bastadge!

that's not always the case BSF. i know quite a few people who have moved in to free cable due to someone else in the building having it and everyone getting it for free. or it being left on...in fact, it used to be like that back in my old flat until some jaggniot moved in and ordered a box so he could get disney for his grandkids. everyone's free cable went down the tubes. please help a brotha out.

You might be right - but I wouldn't take that risk...I got burned by the same thinking when I moved into my first apartment in SF about 8 years ago...the cable was hot when I started setting up things for my move in, so I said to myself 'cool', and didn't bother to line up an install for the actual move date, which was a week later...

I moved in, plugged in my TV to the cable outlet in the wall - static...it was disconnected, and I had to wait THREE WEEKS for an appointment to have them come back out and turn it back on...

On the plus side, I did get to hang out in the sports bar on Polk Street a lot watching NHL hockey on TV

Bitching about what is wrong with cable and not wanting to pay for it, yet, you still want it as long as it is "free".

sorry monsignor. my heart bleeds for charter/comcast/adelphia and all those cocksucking monopolists that have been gouging people with their horseshit price raises for 25 years. fuck em in the ear.

FYI indu, i'd gladly pay if cable was "a la carte" and i could pick the channels i want. i resent having to buy a package where i only watch 10% of the channels. and don't give me that "well they wouldn't make any money horseshit..." cue the violins for John Rigas.

it's a consumer right. the technology is there to offer cable al la carte.

SI, most likely RCN will run their cable over the existing Comcast wiring.

The technology is there, yes. It would send pricing through the roof.

thank you Lippa for actually replying to my post and not offering a lecture.

thought so, and hopefully they don't hose the existing comcast connection. nonetheless, i'll likely pay for cable one way or another in october to get the NHL package. i need to talk to the landlord and see if he would allow a dish to explore all my options.

FYI this is what i'm talking about...although probably killed by Congress.

Where are you living that you get RCN? It has very limited availability.

If the technology isn't too advanced for you....read a book ya freeloadin' prick. Maybe the rates go up all the time because the cable companys have to spend time and money tracking down scofflaws such as yourself.

If you don't like what the cable folks are sellin', don't use it. But be sure to start thread about breaking Federal Law every chance you get.
