  • What individual & group lessons should be learned

    1. Stay in Shape as much as possible - people with medical needs bear the brunt.

    2. Evacaute before the hurricane hits - and not to a local shelter.

    3. Plan for the worse - that means not going back for weeks.

    4. Get all small children as far away as possible.

I did thought maybe they should have bussed out the poor immediately as soon as the evacuation order was issued before the hurricane came.

Also I think they should have mobilized the National Guard beforehand and get ready for whatever needs should arise.

In other words - they are in the reactive mode not the proactive.

I heard somewhere on the radio this morning that New Orleans has had quite a few false alarms over the years. That probably doesn't help when the big one finally hits. :(

We must always assign blame to one man for not saving a city built below sea level against one of the worst hurricanes this century, especially if his name rhymes with tush.

No doubt in my mind. He's to blame for the $3 a gallon gas, too!

Seriously! If you listen to any of the NO "officials" it doesn't sound like the had any sort of plan at all. TX has been more prepared to deal with the situation in NO than the NO officials were. Saw on interview with a TX official (forgot his name) on Bill O'Reilly last night and he was talking about how they already had the Astrodome set up and ready for the refugees. The NO officials have acted like they had no idea what to do with all these people.

The only thing he can be blamed for is the white house budgets that dismantled NO's fighting chance against flooding.

Let's stay focused on reality instead of getting all outrageously defensive.

Another question would be this -

What emergency preparations have you made?

When the power went out in the NE my wife and I have always made preparations every six months.

We have 2 weeks of dry or canned food - 1 week of water - toilet supplies - a gun (although I would hate to use it - but I would hate to be without it more).
