WSJ: iPod phone, flash-based mini on Sept. 7
August 30, 2005 - Citing sources familiar with the matter, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that Apple will use its September 7 event to launch the new iTunes-capable mobile phone alongside Motorola and Cingular. At present it appears Cingular will be the only U.S. carrier that will offer the phone at launch.

The Journal also notes that Apple "may" introduce a new line of flash-based iPods at the event that would replace its iPod mini offerings. The replacement iPod minis are said to be significantly thinner than the current line as a result of forgoing the hard drive.

The New York Times also reported Tuesday that the Motorola/Apple phone would arrive on September 7 and will be carried by Cingular. The phone, the Times said, will allow users to "listen to the songs, presumably through headphones," as opposed to listening to them through salami sandwiches, as originally presumed.

The new phone will be the first to marketed under a new line dubbed ROKR, as has previously been reported.
