He'll finish with over 60 RBI. (Don't worry, I won't claim he's a clutch hitter.) Last Cardinal leadoff man to do that? Gilkey?

Renteria had 63 in '99. That was pre-Vina, with McEwing playing the most 2B. Don't remember how much he led off that year.

Clayton had 61 in '97, but I think DeShields led off more that year (he had 58).

Gilkey had 69 in '95...but did he lead off that year? He was third on the team in HR. He also had 70 in '93.

Coleman never did it, so you'd have to go back a while if none of the above are good enough for you.

Well, VORP Boy, CERTAINLY you have a website that can provide the exact answers in two clicks of a mouse's tail. You might have to go all the way back to Brock to find a higher total than he's likely to have.

In any case, for such a weenie, the guy is driving in some runs. Anyone still want Polanco back?

        OK, found it.

In '99, Renteria hit second slightly more than he hit leadoff (221 AB-198 AB). But Renteria did lead off more than anybody else on the team. He had 228 PAs there; McEwing had 203. So make of that what you will.

Gilkey led off more than anybody in '95, although he only had 44 RBI from the leadoff spot. He had about 150 ABs elsewhere in the order. He had 47 RBI from the leadoff spot in '93.

Still looking for the last guy to get 60 RBI from the leadoff spot. Must placate Reggie.

And Bernard Gilkey's first name is actually Otis.

It's gonna be Brock. Or maybe Bake McBride, but I'm guessing Brock.

Wait, I found it and posted it for a second, but deleted it in favor of playing trivia. It's not McBride or Brock. Hopefully nobody saw it...but guess away.

Edit: We're looking for the last Cardinal to get 60 RBI while batting leadoff...not somebody like Gilkey who led off a lot and had 60 RBI.

              Lonnie Smith?

                Not Lonnie Smith.

His highest total from leadoff was 35.

Goodness. "Bernard" was a step up.

Brock did it twice -- in '73 (61 RBI) and '67 (76 RBI). But somebody did it more recently.

                      Lonnie Smith?
Bingo! How could I have forgotten? Think he had 67 RBI in 1982.

Smith had 69 RBI in '82, but only 35 of them came when he was leading off.

Huh? I don't remember Lonnie batting anywhere but first.

I'd guess Bobby Bonds, but he never stayed healthy enough to get 10 RBI.
