An abritrator has awarded Penguins defenceman Dick Tarnstrom a one-year, $1.6 million contract, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Tarnstrom has made it clear that he wants to stay in Pittsburgh, but the Penguins have other options. The team can reject the award, which would make Tarnstrom an unrestricted free agent. The Penguins, however, would still be allowed to negotiate with Tarnstrom once he hits the open market. The Penguins could also trade his rights to another team.

The Penguins have 48 hours after being informed of the award to make a decision. That makes Monday their deadline.

The figures each team submitted to the arbitrator were not revealed, but Tarnstrom's agent, Mark Stowe, said it was a fair result. Stowe told the Post-Gazette the $1.6 million contract was "well above what they offered, and not what we wanted."

Tarnstrom was the Penguins top scorer in 2003-04 with 52 points.
