Washington:
Friday - Suppan v Esteban Loaiza
Saturday - Mulder v TBA
Sunday - Marquis v Tonay Armas, Jr. (maybe)
Florida:
Monday - Carpenter v AJ Burnett
Tuesday - Morris v Ismael Valdez
Wednesday - Suppan v Jason Vargas (L)
Houston:
Friday - Mulder v Roger Clemens
Saturday - Marquis v Wandy Rodriguez (L)
Sunday - Carpenter v Ezequiel Astacio
All things considered, it could be worse. Washington's pitching staff is pretty beaten up right now. Saturday would have been Ryan Drese's start, but he just went on the DL and I haven't seen them announce yet who will take his spot. Armas is still slated to go on Sunday, but he left his last start after only three innings with shoulder pain. I don't expect him to make the Sunday start, so we will probably be getting replacement starters in 2 of the 3 against Washington.
As for the Marlins, Jason Vargas is their version of Zach Duke. The rookie lefty is 4-1 with a 2.43 ERA. As he's a lefty that we've never seen before, I expect some trouble there.
Houston has days off today and Monday, so they are skipping Wandy Rodriguez twice in the rotation. This will keep Clemens, Oswalt and Pettitte on regular schedule, but it also means that they'll hit the Cardinal series with the backend of their rotation - and Rodriguez pitching for the first time in over a week.
These are some good pitchers we'll be seeing - but the list of the pitchers we'll miss in these three series is even more impressive: John Patterson, Livan Hernandez, Dontrelle Willis, Josh Beckett, Andy Pettitte and Roy Oswalt.
Given what it could be, I'll take it.
