  • The Cards tried to trade for Brian Giles.......

    Or so says this article.........

The game file: Giles could hit the jackpot

    UNION-TRIBUNE
    August 25, 2005

The price of Brian Giles is going up.

Not only will the right fielder be a free agent at the end of the season, he will likely be the Padres' Most Valuable Player.

Last night, the Granite Hills High graduate fell a homer short of becoming the first Padre to hit for the cycle.

His 3-for-5 effort pushed his season average to .299, and he is four walks shy of triple digits. In addition to walks – a category in which he leads the majors – Giles paces the Padres in runs scored, hits, doubles and RBI. He ranks fourth in the National League in on-base percentage.

And he is getting hotter – going 13-for-28 in his last six games with six RBI. So how much would Giles be worth?

Ryan Klesko stands to be the highest-paid Padre next year at $10.5 million. Giles is making $7 million this season. And teams such as the Cardinals, who tried to trade for Giles last night, might be in the bidding.

I wonder who we would deal................

Reyes has to be involved (doesn't he?).

Giles would be one sweet ass addition.

Interesting. Still weird that they'd trade him now. Or, maybe they won't, given that they didn't.

There is no way in hell Reyes would be involved.

I'll pass on a Reyes for Giles deal.

He is pretty old and is a FA at seasons end.
You're being fucking dramatic. You own a TV and an air mattress. That's not exactly what I'd call "a lot to lose."

Sort of surprised we didn't claim him.

          Or maybe we did.

If he passed through waivers, no one claimed him. And the reason we wouldn't claim him is because if we did, the Padres would have pulled him back and then he wouldn't be available for trade. They wouldn't just let him go for nothing.

I wonder if S.D. has the feeling they aren't going to be able to re-sign Giles and are seeing if they can "cash in". That's what it sounds like to me.

I don't want to give up Reyes either. Wainwright can go though.

Reyes won't be traded for an impending FA, come on.

They've got better pitchers in their farm system. They wouldn't want Marquis, especially after his stellar performance the other day.
