Giants' Manning 'week to week' with sprained elbow

ALBANY, N.Y. -- New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning will miss next week's exhibition game against the Jets with a sprained elbow on his throwing arm.

Manning was hurt Saturday night in the first half of the Giants' 27-21 win over Carolina when Julius Peppers stripped him of the ball, recovered it and returned it for a touchdown. Manning's arm kept going forward after the ball came out and he hit his hand on Peppers' helmet.

Manning stayed in the game and later threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Amani Toomer.

Manning was examined Monday morning by Dr. Russell Warren, the team doctor, who said the quarterback had a sprain and bruise on the inside of his right elbow. Coach Tom Coughlin said Manning's status is "week to week."

Coughlin gave the same description of the status of Will Peterson, the team's starting left cornerback. Peterson sprained a ligament in his knee during the victory over the Panthers.

Cardinals play NY in their opening game. It will be kind of ironic if Warner is able to play while the qb of NY's future can't answer the bell.
