It is at U of I, or at least they have their own house. They are guys that earned the Chick Evans scholarship.
I think you are right in that it is not part of the Greek system.

The only frat the seemed halfway reasonable was Evans Scholars. They always gave us beer as we walked by and came to all of our parties at RANCHO DELIRIO (the house I lived in junior and senior years, there were 10 of us).

I got away with going to the rush parties my freshman and sophmore years without pledging.
Then my junior year...I went again...and they asked me to leave.
I never did join one (well a business one but that was just for my resume). I never figured out why someone would want to join one and pay money to have friends.
The fact I went to school with about 10-15 guys from my high school that I was real close to probably a factor as well.
We had our own parties. Hell..sometimes the frat guys came to OUR parties.
College was great.
Then my junior year...I went again...and they asked me to leave.
