  • RIP: Steve's cell phone... 11/21/04 - 8/14/05

Last night I foolishly went camping. My phone got a little bit wet.

Sadly, my phone didn't make it.

Those of you who know me have no doubt seen the frequency of which I use my favorite communication method - be it for booking gigs, hooking up, text messaging or just plain' ole communicating. I'm stricken with grief and sadness.

With the tragic loss of my phone, I have also lost over 150 contacts who were in my address book.

So, as of today, I am officially in the market for a new provider, as well as a new phone. I have a Verizon service agreement that spans until November of this year, so breaking out of the contract won't be a problem. I was using a Samsung a670, which served it's purpose quite well.

I am a tad bit unhappy with Verizon's current Nazi-esque rate plans and crappy phones. Ideally, I would like around 800 - 1000 peak minutes a month, and a bluetooth capable phone (so I can sync my address book on the phone with the one on my computer and not have to worry about losing numbers if the damn thing dies).

    Any suggestions?

Oh, and if I had your phone number, or you had mine... please send me a PM with your contact information so I can *try* to restore my address book...

Official Lounge Sponsor of Lou Brock (really) and Ryan Franklin (really)*

    * Payment processing. It will be official soon.

I thought I'd drowned my Samsung phone in April, and couldn't live without it, so I went and got a new one. The old one came back to life after I sun dried it for a day, then baked it at about 150 degrees for a half hour.

Shouldn't you be able to get your contact information online?

Hold the phone, Steve. I work with electronic circuitry, and we wash boards all the time.

Set your oven @150, place phone on a cookie sheet. Bake for at least 2 hours.

I saved a woman's phone with a hairdryer, but it didn't get as dry. But it did work again.

My boss did the oven trick, but he left it in the oven all night...

I would recommend removing the battery, and either placing it alongside the phone on the cookie sheet, of drying it off seperately with the hair dryer.

If that doesn't work, US Cellular is new in town.

I use Sprint your ass to the next tower.

They allow you to get free nights starting at 6 PM for an extra $5 a month.

If you live in the city or near a major highway (which I know you do) it works fine. Alot of people complain about Sprint, but I switched to Sprint from Cingular about 5 years ago and I've stayed w/ them...
You're being fucking dramatic. You own a TV and an air mattress. That's not exactly what I'd call "a lot to lose."

Also Sprint and Nextel finalized their merger. I doubt anything will happen right now but who knows down the road.

Sprint BLOWS! I routinely let them know that the PCS in Sprint PCS stood for Piece of Crap Service, and I routinely got a month or 2 of free service.

I finally disconnected service with them, and I'd definitely get Cingular since it actually works in the building I work in.

The Sprint phone wouldn't even let me roam off of verizon's tower fo $.40 a min.

I was willing to pay...So I called, ranted for 30 min., talked to about 3 people, got 2 months FREE service.

It DOES pay to be an asshole!

Steve, this is probably the phone you are going to want to get:

Jack, at some point today I'll probably call and complain about the same thing in hopes of getting a month or two for free.

                    Is that Zach Morris' phone?

My uncle had a phone like that...

They used that in the short lived "That '80's Show.

I'm tempted to try US Cellular when my Verizon deal is up, but for some reason, outside of trying to use my phone in the house, it works everywhere...

It worked for me when I baked my phone. I was guessing when I set it at 150. Sounds like Jack knows.
